New amp/new speakers?

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

New amp/new speakers?

Post by kev » Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:09 pm

Got myself a new amp ,well its an old one really but its in as new
condition.
Have you heard of a Phoenix Gold M50 ?
Image
I believe it was pretty good in its day.I am using it just to drive the front
speakers.
Now heres the thing I have the chance of some Boston Pro component
speakers 6" , 4" & tweeters but to fit them I would need to modify the
door cards and get rid of the door pockets.
Has anyone done this? Was it difficult?
Ihave a set of JBL components at the minute which are good but.........
Cheers all

Sorry matey I didn`t see where it was I was intrigued by your Graphic
equalizer.
Does it connect straight into your head unit then from the equalizer to your amplifier ?
Can you connect more than one amp to it ?
Would be interested in your door install ,keep me informed. ATB

Hi kev
The graph runs the amps Front, rear and sub it has a single input from the rca leads on the back of the head unit itthen splits the signal and allows me to adjust the eq to all four speakers and also allows me to adjust the volume of bass and also the frequency that i send to the amp for the 2 12" rockfords
my front amp is mounted behind a rallye style kick plate in the passengers footwell ;)

Well I have fitted my new speakers in a cuctom door pod

Image

This was a major undertaking ,and thanks to Red for his thread on how
to do a door build.

I have done it differently but the basics are the same.

Sure you don't want to sell your amp to me? The old M-series of Phoenix Gold isn't that good (ok they are, but I want it :-)). I've once had a M44 4ch amp, and it easely drove a 5 1/4" set of front-speakers and a 12" sub (2ch bridged into 1ohm).

The great advantage of the M-series is that you can apply very low resistances and gain power that way. Allthough if your planning on bridging into below 1 ohm, you shuld add a fan to the cooling-ribs, to ensure sufficient cooling. As long as it is kept cold, you can go into very, very low impedances!

Very nice Kev :D

I was toying with the idea in Ursula-had the templates made up for a pair of Infinity References with crossovers, but the sudden descision to sell Ursula quashed that! Mine too was thanks to Red's 'How To'.

You really need to get a Diary going, with progress pics. I want to see in-progress pictures of your builds (the pods too!).

Thanks guys . It really was a lot of work but I think they justify the effort.
The increase in volume is the first thing that hit me . Also integating the
rears and sub was a concern but I have picked up a Phoenix Gold EQ215x
graphic equaliser and it sends the correct signals to the amps .For the bass
I have a bass control so there are hours of fun setting it all up.
Dan I will start a thread with pics soon.
Red thanks again for your "how to".

Well I have set my new Amp and Equaliser up.
Image

Sounds great with loads of adjustment .

I think I will make a perspex cover for the EQ so the settings wont
get knocked.

Sounds and looks good.

Now all you need to do is light it up! Get a couple of red LED's on each side so it glows red, and a couple around the vents that cover your amps up. Would look pretty cool in the dark. You're putting in all this work and not showing it off. It's not chavvy, it's cool! I done it with Ursula's. Had super white LED's under the amp cover so the amp glowed white. Looked cool imo.

Makes me want to build an install!

I love it Kev, you're brilliant. You've knocked that up in not time, and it looks really good! Ever considered a career change? Looks like you may have found a hidden talent!

Look forward to the next mod now...;)

Wow love the lighting/perspex..i wanted to something like this when i made my parcel shelf...but with the perspex as a window on the parcel shelf so you could see it from the boot window...but the boot was too shallow for that :(

Thanks for the kind remarks. I find I do enjoy messing about but this
install has just evolved as I have bought various pieces. What I would
like to do is start from scratch and put some thought into it.
The first thing I would do is .........
"Yes dear I`m I`ll be up soon"
