Best modern HU for 480 dash

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Best modern HU for 480 dash

Post by DaKyy » Fri Dec 07, 2007 3:23 am

I'm not after fancy looking new head units with flipdown faceplates and other utterly useless features. I'm just looking for a Radio/CD and perhaps and MP3 player that would fit nicely to the 480 dash. So the lighting is preferably green and the faceplate black. What choices do I have - and what was yours? :)

Yay! A non Sat-Nav or Genuine accessory question!

I chose an Alpine for mine in the end. I had always wanted an Alpine as i had read such good reviews on them-it had the Ai Net box of tricks to let you hook your iPod to it, and it was good quality.

In the 2 years that it was in my car it never faultered. And the display could be changed blue/orange/red/green. And the green was just right for the dash. I looked at it everyday but cannot remember for the love of god what it was. I think it was a CDA-9885r or something like that. Fitted in well...

Ignore the red/blue LED's by the iPod in the third pic and you can see it fits in nicely. Good CD player too. I paid £200 for it, but that was with the iPod Ai Net box-without at the time you could pick it up for about £140. I think Kev has the newer version if i remember rightly...

That looks quite nice - altough a bit pricey for me. I was in a general area of about 150e max. I found out some other Alpine models in that price range that should fit my needs. And even found one with green buttons! That silver knob though is what I don't like :)

I won't need an ipod connection but usb-stick-support would be a nice addition.

Here is mine....

I know what you mean about the silver knob but it performs so well I can
overlook it.

i'm thinking about buying a Pioneer DEH 4000 UB or an Pioneer DEH p65BT.
On these types you can adjust the screencolours, and the colour green
is also available. (just like the rest of the dashboard)

Is isen't the Pioneer DEH 4000 UB but the DEH 5000 UB. The 4000 has
got an red lighting, and USB at the front.

The 5000 UB has got USB on the rear side (you can put an USB cable in,
and let it get out in the dash lid. of in the centre console. The 5000 has
also got the adjustable screencolors

(that's why i bought it ;) ) (The DEH 5000 UB)

Just fitted this one. Kenwood KDC-W312SAY. Yes, I know the colours aren't ideal but it has 3 wavebands & will play CD's and MP3 CD's. I transcribed 5 of my CD's onto an MP3 CD, using Nero & could have fitted more on; very convenient. It also has a front socket for an MP3 player. Price? £80

Theres one very similar to this and you had the choice of Green or Red (I stupidly chose Red/Orange as I bought it before I got the car) and it cost me around £50 now - I paid £70 I think. Its a Kenwood W3534 or W3537 or something like that. It has iPod and Bluetooth upgrades available as well :) Very pleased with mine to be honest :D

I recently acquired this lovely older model Alpine head unit. It fits so well with the dash. :-) I have also installed white led's in the heater controls. I tried to post this last night but it obviously did not work...

Hi, am interested in this one as I have been contemplating a change too.

Although I have been contemplating having my original Volvo cassette/radio rebuilt by one of these people who advertise in the classic car mags. I don't want a cd player, too much of a fiddle to change.....nor did I want an ipod/mp3 socket, again too much of a fiddle to use (ipod flopping aroud in car and having to use the ipods' controls etc.... so I was going to have a remote USB socket added and put it in place of the blanking pieces on the seat heater switch/long range headlamp strip. I use this set up, albeit with a modern Sony unit, in my Camper and find it very practical and incredibly easy to use. A memory stick holds a huge amount of music, they are small and easy to store and the controls are all carried out on the radio unit. Also of course, the radio which will be FM/MW/DAB, will at least have the appearance of being age appropriate.

Have you considered this as an option?

Has anyone else gone down the road of having a modern radio built into thier "classic" radio shell?

Regards
I'd rather be following my piscatorial pursuits!

Les, sometime down the line, thats almost exactly what I'dd like to do (though I'm not bothered about the usb thing). I think other people on here have used DAB radios? hopefully they used the existing aerial&wiring meaning they are compatible?

In my other car I have an newer alpine ipod head unit with the Ipod in the glove box. Job done. Plenty of tunes and no visible cables.

I just posted that picture because I have not seen another modernish head unit that matches the dash as well as that one.

My first 480 had a really nice Kenwood with a reversable faceplate that was blank on the reversed side, so it looked like their was no radio! For some reason it looked really well in the 480! Never seen a similar one for sale since though.
