Radio CR 4025?

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Radio CR 4025?

Post by 480s partner » Wed May 16, 2007 6:26 pm

Hello to everybody.

Anyone knows the specs of the original volvo radio CR 4025?
Was this the optional radio model sold specifically for the 480 back in 1986? Up to what year was it sold? It was superseeded by which model?
Can anyone tell me if the sound quality is any good...?
I mean, apart from the historic interest one could have on such piece of hardware, is it viable for decent audio listening nowadays?

By the way, where did the radios' page go to?

I very much doubt it!

It wasn't untill the 850 (or very late 940's) that the volvo stereos were up to anything much. Now they are almost second to none as far as standard fit goes.

Hello,

I belive CR-4025 was the optional radio model for Volvo 480 back in 1986(at least mine has been bought with a Volvo 480ES back in february 1987.

In the Volvo 480 launch book in 86, there can be seen pictures of a TD-3055 radio. But as a "Tuner Deck" allways needs an separate amplifier there must have been other options.

In the Volvo 480 accesories brouchure of 87(I think it´s the first one?) the radios are: CR-402X(CR-405X), CR-308X(CR-309X) looks very old fashioned :) and TD-304X(TD-305X).
Possible same in 86?

I think CR-4025 is a stylish radio thats suits the "early" 480´s very well.
Specs: "Cassette Radio" 2 x 8 W, possible to save 15 channels, digital clock display, possible to add an amplifier and an equalizer 611, background light: green and orange.

It was sold at least still in 1990, but in 1991 bouchures it´s missing.

Remember it sounding with original front speakers and tweeters a bit retro but fine, made me smile :) and the display looks really good when on! Definately keeping it for later projects!

Regards,
Anton

Hello Anton_K,

Thanks for the info. Great stuff!

Just one thing is troubling me: are you sure about the 2x8 watts output?
I have tracked down a CR4025 but the owner states it can output 4x6 Watts... Since I really would like to use the rear speakers, this is something I must check carefully.

Hello JRT,

Nice if it was useful, pretty sure about the 2 x 8W(checked from the owners manual) but it´s possible it´s alternatively 4 x 6W? I will check again on monday when I´m home!

Just fixed the radios page on the clubs website:

http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/radios.php

Will display radio info when you're logged in on the clubs website also.

According to my accessories-book the CR402X will produce 2x8W output.

Hello,
2x8W here too. I think best would be to add an amplifier(for example HA-2120 or 4120) for the rear speakers(fronts from the radio), recommended this way by volvo at the time.

Anton

HI everyone.

Sorry, it's me again.

Well, I decided to buy the radio anyway, but I am completely lost one the connections. Can anyone help me to identify the wires on the back of the radio, which one is which?
Anyone has the manual for the cr-4025 scanned or knows if it's on the net somewhere?

HELP!!!!!!!

Tough one, can't you make sense from the colors in the harness? As soon as you figure out how to bring it alive you're able to experiment with speakers to see which is which...

So far I managed to identify most of them, but I am still left with an orange and black on a connector (seem to power something), a yellow one with a fuse and a grey one on the main connector (the big 3x3) which is on the place of the dummy pin. These remain a mistery to me.
However, I already get sound from it. It's quite nice, actually. Old tapes and compact discs (via an adaptor going through the deck) sound like I remember them being played 10-20 years ago.

Still, I am wondering if I could link the rear speakers to the front ones and get sound from all the four speakers...
A parallel connection should split the signal from the left channel and allow output to front left/rear left, same to the right channel. If the output is 2x8watt how much would each of the four speakers get?
Could this damage the radio or the speakers in any way?

It would work, basically it would halve output in theory. The only reason the stereo splits them is so you can set up the fader balance on the h/u to move the sound to where it sounds best.
