Volvo 480 Club Europe

After a trip to the scrappy I have found myself in possesion of some rather nice cubby hole speakers. I'd really like to use them, but I've just gone and bought some component rear speakers already for the 5" holes that already exist.

The only way I reckon this is going to work, using all speakers is this:

JBL bass speakers driven by external amplifier, left where they are.
JBL tweeters placed in rear cubby tweeter position (yes they fit), driven by external amplifier.
Standard cubby speakers driven by speaker output from radio. I might consider constucting a midrange-pass filter as there will be plenty enough treble and bass from the components, looking at the speaker though, I don't think its going to be capable of sub 100Hz bass, likewise for high frequencies.

What do you lot think, am I mad, in a coma, or did i travel back in time?

they're reputed to be pretty whack i'm affraid!!

They create hardly any noise! I retro-fitted the rear inner panels from a car that had rear wall mounted speakers and then fitted these type speakers and they are great(well ok). They make a noticeable sound as opposed to the cubby hole ones.

It's a shame that the cubbyhole speakers are supposedly so shit, I like the concept!

What are the cubby hole speakers? Are these the ones on the rear 3/4 panels?

its them speaker in the holes next to each rear seat.

volvo also did some speakers for the side wall at the rear.
these arent that good either.

ok the standard volvo ones arent very good but you can buy some jbl's that fit into the 'holder' of these speakers - just make sure you seal them into the cubby hole and they'll sound great!! - thats what i did anyway!!

the problem with the cubbies is that they are basically airthight and not very big of volume so the speaker, any one, wont have that soundspace.
the better solution is on the sidepanel as there is more sound space.
the problem with the original cover is that they are not veru deep so they cant hold any aftermarket speaker.

So what size is the rear panel speaker?

If I don't care about using a cover, I guess I could utilise some spacer rings to liberate some space behind the speaker?

sidepanels are 12 cm
but if you dont bother about the cover then you can fit 6" x 9" there.
there are some who did that

I just 'doubled-up' the original Volvo grilles. Smoothed the edges with P38 and resprayed. Holds aftermarket speakers just fine now without altering the look too much. Done the same with the fronts too.

Piece of cake to do-gallery here. I know the pics show the front speaker covers, but i done the same to the rear side panel speakers too.

Hmm, seems to be that if anything a cubby hole speaker is a waste of space, as opposed to saving it? I have the later 94+ rear speaker pods which fit just above the cubby holes and use space in the side of the car that would otherwise remain unused. Plus I still get the storage space of the cubby holes, and with a set of 13cm JL's which really compliment my front components well, it sounds great.

I have two sets of the speaker fittings for sale if anyone's interested. I can include the original Volvo PaperCone speakers if you like, but I'd save the postage as you'll only want to bin them.

I'm being pushed to rear cubby hole speakers renewal. They sound like shit. Has to be done.

As I disassemble the thing I find that theese are no convetional size and I can't find any make that will do this size anymore. They are sepparate tweeter and "rest of the range" driven by a tiny 8 x 16 cms oval speaker. That would be 3.15 x 6.3 inches spekaers. So I tried 4x6 inches but they won't fit in the hole.

Thinking of getting a pair of cubby holes plastics from a pair of scrappy ES I have spotted and try to cut the inner wall of the cube and fit them somehow inside.

I know they're not the best option but I'm not ready to cut the rear side wall of the car and fit a wall ones. Anyone knows what freaking speaker size is this and where to find ??

Tweeters won't be a problem as little Alpines fit perfectly and do even have a screw to hold like the originals.

What maximum depth could the front 5.25 ones have so that the panel will close back without problem? Any recomendation?
