Wired for sound
Hi all, Here are some photos of some speakers I have fitted since
reading all other threads.I have used JBL to keep the cost down &
to get a decent sound.I used a 10" sub woofer in a home made box
using MDF offcuts. The front face is 1" thick & recessed to mount the
Sub.This box is mounted on a plinth inserted into the rear armrest
bracket.
[/img]
I used some carpet offcut I got for £5 ,enough to do the floor as well.
On the back of the box I attached the Amp I got off E-bay again ror £5.
To keep prying eyes away I used some acoustic cloth to cover the front .
The rear cover then hides the whole thing.
So its not a ported box and it is small so big bass is not on offer but for
an old un its enough to give my old rock cd`s some weight.
Next I bought two sets of component speakers for front & rear.
My wife thinks i have gone barmy but it gets addictive .She thinks I am
going to hang out with the boy racers down at Tescos but as I pointed out -boy racers not bald fat ones.
The first thing was to remove the original tweaters .Took a bit of cutting out but eventually it went in and what a differance
it made so crisp & clear. The original cover fits over no problem
The wooferrs went straighr in.
Next the rears. The woofers were a tad too deep to fit into the pod
so a small amount of cutting had to be carried out.The tweaters of
coarse needed holes in the speaker card and panel.A bit messy this but
once started...Again the original covers fit straight on
The sound is really good far better than the original sound of the old set up.Also I still have room in my boot.
So I hope this is of intrest sorry if its a bit long but this is my first go
Do you think I should amp the speakers ?
Thanks for looking
ps Enjoyed the Lincoln meet ,met some fine people .I will camp longer next time .

Amplifying the speakers made a huge difference to the sound quality when I did it. Just keep the power cable separate from the phono cables otherwise you get an awful, interefering whine!!

might try that with the wife.....must keep her away from power cables to stop the awful interfering whine.......crispy-d wrote: Just keep the power cable separate from the phono cables otherwise you get an awful, interefering whine!!

Old farts music
Well now, being an old fart I have a large choice of music at my

modern contempory. When you listen to music age doesn`t matter
you can still feel it.Yeah baby....Thanks Joolz

Thanks
Thanks for your comments Dan. It was your project that got the ball
rolling in the first place .I am a bit partial to HiFi in the home so a
chance to play with the 480 was inevitable ,as the Borg would say
"Resistance is futile".

thinking outside the box (no pun intented).
Instead of trying to find carpet/material to match the existing boot one, just change the existing boot one to match the sub box!
You've obviously spent a lot of time on your install, well done.

Bit of an old wives tale that one, only really happens if you use cheap unshielded RCA cables. If you use double or triple shielded RCA's you can run next to power cables.crispy-d wrote:Amplifying the speakers made a huge difference to the sound quality when I did it. The whine is to do with a grounding loop, get a ground isolator on the RCA's to eliminate the whine. Also ground the head unit to the body directly and not through the standard wiring.

Yeah, do. I like seeing what people do-quite into my car audio and installs-just never had the money to do a complete proper install. It'snice seeing what other people can achieve without a hooooj budget and how subtle the finishes end up...Jamo wrote:If you like that i'll dig out some pics of installs i've done with Lee.Dan the 480 Man wrote:Thats what i likes, some good home built stereo. Don't worry about anyone else, just post 'em! I don't have the courage to start a new thread, otherwise i'd start one so everyone could post pics rather than hijacking Kev's thread! If you don't want to post them here, just PM me. I'll do a swap and give you some of my 440 install too-i know you'd love to see thatEd. wrote:Looks neat and tidy, good job. I have made a few installs in the past in my 440. The current one is a tad bigger than previous ones If anyone other than dan is interested, then i might post some pics.

Follow my link and click on Project Directed. That was my first serious system in the car. It sounded good and i still do miss the bass from the special efmax box. The current install is a bit more lairy, still not complete either
