Waxoyling ports??

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Waxoyling ports??

Post by johnd » Tue Dec 09, 2003 3:13 pm

I want to waxoyl the inside of my front/rear wings and the sills. Anyone know the best places to get in and spray the stuff?

Is it worth drilling access holes and then blocking them off?

Cheers

John

Front wings: remove the plastic from inside the wheel arch.
Rear wings: remove the trim inside the car.
Sills: I would have thought you could use the drain holes?

Is this the right time of year to do this?...I find that Waxoyl goes on best when warm....also it is a crap job to do in the heat, let alone in the cold!!!

I shall be doing this to mine come the summer months...

It will work if you stick the can in a bucket of boiling water, but the main problem this time of year is any condensation tends to get sealed in. If you must do it now, it's worth spraying in some light, cheap, oil first to disperse any water and creep into the seams.

whats waxoil ?
is it the same as tektile for holow spaces ? them whit big spraycans with the long thin tube and the special nozzle ?

good stuff this tektiel. it made my other car live to be 30, whithout any big rust.

I saw i could see in the frame work as i took away and replaced the steel bumper part.

the stuf i used drives away condens, instead of sealing it in. its very very penetrating. It will preserve your lungs long after you die, but its real good stuff. :?

small disadvantage : your car smells like a beaver for months.

Waxoyl (appear to) make all kinds of car car products, but the one most commonly known (and often just called by their company name), I would imagine it this. At least, that's the only product that I was aware of, before looking at their website!

Hi,

I believe you can choose between tectyl and wax for internal corrosion prevention.

Wax is generally used if a car has been waxed before from factory because its no use using tectyl on a car that has been treated with wax. Wont hold very well.

I used tectyl products, again two types: for internal use, very runny thin stuff that creeps everywere that you can apply with a long tube to reach internals.
The other stuff is the thicker black stuff used for external plating, wishbones etc. Applied as spray paint.

For a 480 i would go for tectyl product not for wax products.
When internal of car was stripped i used the openings inside the car, the stuff ran out from the outside under the car. With the car on the lift you can reach every nook and cranny with the runny tectyl and the tubing.
For the bottom i used the thicker stuff.

Dont forget wheel arches, remove the plastic. The front and back bumper carrier. (is a bitch to remove, but they were rusty as hell.)
I even did the doors and the inside of the roof, specially the structure at the front window, had some rust there. Also did the wishbones and all other steel under the car.

I love tectyl, i think i used about 6 big spray cans in total.

On my old fiesta (old but immaculate when I gave it to my sister) I used the Waxoyl you get in a steel can, not the aerosol stuff. I then kept the stuff in the direct sun for a couple of hours to make nice and runny. To apply it I used a pressurised Plant sprayer, it went on like a dream..I removed plugs and sprayed it in, waiting until I couyld see Waxoyl running out the drain holes before moving on. I would say his is a very good way of preserving your car. The other main advantage is that by the time you have finished (if you are being thorough enough) you will have a good idea of the condition of all of your car and be more familiar with areas that require more attention.

I used the clear waxoyl for the fiesta, not sure about the black stuff, I know that you can wash it off any paint work if needed, I even did the underside iof the bonnet, the boot interior...yes it does smell, but not for very long.

But I would not even entertain the idea of doing it this time of the year, unless you have a heated garage and you do not mind wrecking the floor...which is another point....COVER your driveway as Waxoyl will permanently mark the floor.

Worth using Google to search on this, there is a guiy that does this for 4x4 cars, he lists his method from start to finish and they are worth following...pressure wash underside of car first, arches, sills sides, front and rear.

If you talk to many classic car owners, they all use Waxoyl to preserve body work.

Perhaps we could get a list of interested parties and buy in bulk and then get together one weekend for a mass-preservation party?

i've got a reciept from Ziebart for my Mk2 Escort which was treated when it was brand new, it seems to have worked as its still not bad after nearly 27 years!! I think Ziebart used much the same stuff except they were more thorough, drilling holes in inacessable pleces to spray it in.

Hi Steve,

I think you miss Gaz's point, this is an excuse for a PARTY!

A good excuse mind you.

If we want to do it ourselves I should be able to arrange a decent discount for the product via the business.

I will keep watching this space to see what prices you guys negotiate.

Regards

Chris

It is a very good excuse for a party/meeting, but in the end I am not particularly bothered if we do it ourselves or have some professional do it, as long as we get a good deal for a bulk/block purchase or booking - Steve definately make inroads with this guy and see what kind of prices you can get. We can then see how much it would cost to buy the stuff and hire the kit to do it ourselves and see which we all fancy?

Hi Guys,

Cheers for the info. the question now is Tectyl or Waxoyl??

I have done a fair bit already with the waxy bugger so probably continue on with it. I know it's the wrong time of year but if I get a couple of dry days it's going in.

In is better than out.......so to speak!!!

I would use tectyl for several reasons.
1 its a more modern product and will fit better in the existing inner anti corrosion of volvo.

2 it doesn't seal in moist like wax, but it " pushes water away"

3 the 600 ml spraycan is real good to handle. you don't need a summers day, a special sprayer or a compressor.

4 i have real good experience with this product. It made my other car turn 30 years old

and I can go on....

One drawback, VF, I don't think it's available in this country and importing may prove prohibitively expensive... (I haven't looked though, but I've never heard of it)
