A/C Compressor still functioning below 10C

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

A/C Compressor still functioning below 10C

Post by VOLVO480S » Thu Dec 04, 2003 8:02 pm

I drive a 480S 2.0ltr my 93 --> no info-centre

As I don't have an info-centre, where does my A/C compressor read the outside temperature? --> this time of year is perfect to check things, but how can I be sure that no damage is done to the compressor, when I want to de-mist the windows, below 10 degrees???

Thanks,
Robert

A/C compressor

I didn't think that the A/C compressor is interested in the outside temperature.
Doesn't it simply operate when you switch it on, which is why you can use it together with the heater to dehumidify the air in winter.

As is also stated on the 480 FAQ on the website: Volvo has a safety feature built in to prevent you from wrecking the compressor. There is some debate about the min. operating temp. Until I see proof that the original Volvo A/C works below 10 degrees C I will let this assumption stay in the FAQ :)

Well, even though I've tried on numerous occasions to check if the air-con works in my 480 which I've had just over a month now, I've never succedded. I'm counting on the less than 10°c thing, because whenever I've tried it, the infocenter has always* shown it being less than 10°c, and I've assumed that's why it's not working. The previous owner assured me that it did work.

* There was one occasion when the infocenter was reading 11°c, and it still didn't work, so I assumed that it probably uses a different sensor to the infocenter (possibly somewhere on/in the compressor itself?). That would also make sense with regards to the OP's question.
