Pre-tensioners

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Pre-tensioners

Post by Richard Kenward » Sun Jul 31, 2005 12:14 am

I have bought a repair kit for the pre-tensioner on the passenger seat for a GT 1994. These are the mechanical type and I wondered if there are any things to be aware of when trying to fit this part. The local Volvo agents have never fitted one and so were not able to offer any advice.

Cheers

WHere did you get this "kit" from and how much did it cost you? I ask because I have a pre-tensioner that needs fixing on one of my 480s.

Dear Gaz

It was about forty quid. Volvo have stopped listing these for the 480 but the part is available for the 440 and is the same part number. You know that the later model ones were mechanical rather than percussion don't you?

All the best

Dear Garry

The part number I have from the invoice is 3345245 It's called Repair kit. List ex vat was £39.00 I get a 10% reduction on most Volvo parts there BTW. A lot better than buying the whole thing. That's assuming I can fit it OK!

the ones on my jaquard seats were mechanical....just a big spring, with some sort of mechanism to 'fire' it.....the drivers seat had gone off,but the passenegers was ok, til i took it out, and dropped the car...then bang....off it went!!
i took the covers off the seat belt holders, and managed to get a small screwdriver under the metal slide....you can force the teeth in there to disengage, allowing you to pull the seat belt holder back to the top of the slide.....that was the easy bit!
theres a wire (rope type wire, not electrical!) that runs from the seat belt holder to the pre tensioner.....took this off, and removed the whole pre tensioner cylinder from the side of the seat......i then put the wire in a vise, and tried to pull the tensioner back to 'armed' but it seems to require more effort than im capable of (plus my friend AND me pulling at it!!)
i think that it would have been ok,had we been able to set the spring back, but we couldnt, so ive just left them off.....doesnt affect the seat belts in any way, other than them not being pre tensioned

I was told by my contact at the Volvo dealers that slaming the seat back will set them off so take care, I know I will in future!

Cheers :)

because the mechanical ones are just a big spring inside a cone shaped plastic bit and when they are fired, the plastic cone shreds and you can see the spring has been fired.

Might not be as obvious on a car where both are gone, but it's very obvious in mine where one is gone and one is ok

What you will see, certainly on the mechanically triggered ones is that the triggered one will have it's ancorage point (where to plug the belt in) set much lower and the plastic cover to the fixing point will have parted due to the fitting having been forced downwards.

Cheers

My passenger one used to be OK - - - then one day it came back from a Volvo service and it had gone off... tut tut Mr.Volvo dealership
They replaced it for me but kept muttering about the SRS system being more than 10 years old and it not being worth it. I growled angrily at them (but couldn't get them to replace my drivers side one for free aswell!)
