Subframe protection-it may cost you your car if left!

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Subframe protection-it may cost you your car if left!

Post by catgroom » Tue Jul 05, 2005 8:02 pm

Hi everybody peeps!

I recently visited Rich Pruen and we had a good old look under my car whilst doing some jobs.

I knew my subframe had some rot.He thankfully pointed out that it was in real need of protecting now.He suggested Hammerite and has used it to coat the frame on his Turbo.

This job is one of urgency and well worth inspecting your car between MOT tests. The cost of a garage changing the frame is prohibitive for many, pushing the thousand pound mark.

Just to say that I have recently had some parts from a really clean 440 Turbo on a 94/L.When I first saw it I thought it was too good to break, writing it off to a stolen recovered or something. Then when I next saw it I saw the underside, which seemed damned good until I noticed a fist sized hole in the back of the subframe making it obvious that this was why it was there, and it was! You'd never see this unless you were right under the car, that rust has many months to develop between the MOT test.

Might be worth u having a look at yours,it could save your 480!

Steve. :D

Get a set of axle stands. Not much. Homebase or argos should do a set cheap. Either that or drive the front wheels of your car onto a curb and then you should have space to get under. Whatever you do, leave it in gear for safetys sake!

P.S will be posting that cheque off for you as soon as my pay comes through :D

My S is standard ride height, andwont go up ramps, so the lowered ones are defo gonna struggle.
decent trolley jack and stands are the way to go....dont scrimp....will be worth it in the long run...tyres under the body dont really work you know.

I remember a few years back the Chairman of the Triumph owners club being killed under his car when it slid off the supports - also seen my gramps merc slide off it's jack (was on uneven surface mind). So always be careful while under a ton of Volvo people!

Mine has too. I've got a 440 as a donor car, do you know if the sub-frames are interchangeable?
