light switch indicators

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

light switch indicators

Post by Ernie » Tue Nov 18, 2003 1:37 pm

The green indicator lamps of the pop-up light switch in my car are not working anymore. Same for the indicator lamps next to the switches for fog-lights and rear window heater. Probably a bulb replacement ... Where did they hide that bulb? And how do I reach it?

Besides that the green led illumination around the ignition key hole faded out ... Fuses seem to be ok. Any suggestions for the cause of this defect and how to repair it?

Thanks in advance!

It is a single bulb that illuminates all of the items you have mentioned if I remember correctly. Can't remember where it is though and whether you need to demolish the dash to get to it. I THINK it is located behind the headlight switch, which is removed by pulling (check the FAQ section on the clubsite for lightswitch and dash disassembly instructions.) Worst case is you need to take the dash off to get to it, but hey - if you do that, you might as well replace ALL bulbs (including the infocentre halogen)

Hi Ernie
You will have to take off the surrounding mask off the instruments. :cryhard:
So take out the two switches and take away the surrounding (See the FAQ part off the club) Then you can see the bulb that lights the switches.
Good Luck

The light around the key is on the same circuit as the main interior light.
Is this switched on? If yes than the keylight bulb may have failed.
The bulb for the fog light switches etc. is located behind the switches, the whole unit just pulls out (be carefull). As for the green headlight lamp I assume you mean the one in the dash? If so this is adash out job. (not as bad as it sounds) see: http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/index2.html 480 FAQ section

The same bulb is used for both the 3-switches (heated screen and fogs), and the round headlight/pop-up knob. You can get to it by pulling out the round knob, and it's behind there, although (if memory serves), not very easy to get at. I think I used some rubber ended (to hold the bulb) tweezers to the replacement bulb into mine.

Of course, if your happy to dismantle the dashboard, it's much easier to get to the bulb, but I'm assuming you haven't done that before, or you wouldn't be asking where the bulb was! I think there's a guide somewhere on the club homepage, probably in the FAQ section (but I could be wrong!)

EDIT [in the time I spent writing that, 3 other kind people have also written pretty much the same thing - doh!] :D

On a side, but slightly related note - did the later models have lit keyholes? Only my car doesn't light them up, but there's nothing that obviously looks like a ring that would illuminate, so I am wondering if it was a feature that was dropped in the later models?

Hi Gaz,

Yes my 95' has lit keyholes. If I remember correctly when I was looking through the DVD it gave a detailed description of replacing them (might be wrong as I have looked through so much info I feel ill.

Hi Ernie,

Here is a piccy from my 'how to remove the dashboard' pdf. You can see the bulb in question just behind the screw pick up tool

Hope that is of some use.

Chris
