Water leak near front of car - any ideas????

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Water leak near front of car - any ideas????

Post by johnd » Mon Nov 03, 2003 7:05 pm

I came out the other morning to find the drivers footwell/rear seat well soaking. I parked it downhill the next night and no more water has come in so I am assuming that the leak is coming in around the pedal area. I have recently waxoiled the underside of the car but made certain to avoid any drain holes.

There appeared to be no water on the rooflining so I assume it's not the sunroof.

Anyone got any ideas about where the water may be coming in before my carpet/footwell rots away?

Cheers

John

Hmmmm....just found an idea on the volvo club uk that it may be the relay box. Does anyone know where this leaks exactly before I fill the whole thing with silicon

I heard from Daniel480 that the rectangular window in the door was to blame, will ask Danny if he wants to make a contribution to this thread :)

Hello,

I used to have the same problem with my old 480ES, I found out the problem was the small triangular window in the door as well. However there are countless other potential reasons that relate to the heater matrix as well. Many of these have been covered in the old forum.

Best of luck

my car leaked at the righthandside roof rubber. water could run from a, b, and c pillar down. (see also threads about the wet seatbelt)(=B pillar)

anyhow if you parked it nose down water could get in via the rear lights too !!!

I would advise a rain test, with gardenhose up the roof, closed in with tools, and look..... see where it :cryhard:

Hi Guys,

I shall try the other tests to find out.

Volvofox, no probs with the rear clusters as it's a 94 and sweet as a nut in that department. Give it a couple of years though!!!

Can anyone just enlighten me on the heater matrix issue though. The search is useless on the old site now and as I had a pool of water in the back im not sure if this could be the case or is it being suggested the water is coming in via the matrix.............did the car take the blue pill or the red pill?

Cheers

John

I undid the water pipes and just connected them to each other without it going to the heater! :hopping:

Under the bonnet there are two triangles..

Post by rogue » Thu Nov 06, 2003 9:18 am

In the corners ...these both have rubber- flapped drain holes which have a tendancy to block up..now , one of these "triangles" has the air intake which leads to the heater...are you following this..?

Going back to the start of the thread, one of the cars we raced, when we stripped it out it was absolutely covered in silicone, round all the window seals, lights, and then on the floor, every hole (the ones into box sections etc) had plastic siliconed over it. They had obviously been in a relentless search for the source of the leak.

I had to laugh though.

It turned out the drain pipes for the sunroof were discharging inside the car!!!!!

Two went down the rear C pillars and were supposed to go through a grommet behind the wheel arches, but didn't, and the other two went down the windscreen pillars, and went into the engine bay I think, I don't really remember about the front ones.
