Locks
My 480 No.2 has a replaced drivers' door lock that doesn't seem to be fitted properly as it sticks out a bit and doesn't operate the red thing inside. (Worrying thing is that it was fitted by Volvo themselves according to history!).
Anybody got any experience of changing all the locks. Plan is to get a set from a scrap car (WILL 440 or 460 FIT?). I am confident with doors and boot lock (glove box too... mustn't forget) but the ignition lock.... is that hard work?
Its a right faf on with two keys at the moment.

in respect to the red bit inside....thats only operated by a little level off the lock barrel.
the plastic housing it sits in, pulls off quite easily, you can then get to the door lock, and the retaining bits.
when you put it back on, make sure you pull the red bit out, and put it over the level on the lock.
the doors locks and boot lock arent hard to swap...maybe 10 mins each
never really had the ignition apart, so dont know about that.

ignition lock, changed this.
need to take the fascia off, take the cowling off around the steering column, and then drill out the shear bolts holding the lock on the column. This could be very hard, as you have to fit a drill in there! (no room with the windscreen in) luckily my father had just bought a right angled drill, which made it a lot easier.
I replaced the shear bolts with normal allen head bolts, if someone is going to go to the time and trouble of taking my car that far apart to nick it, fair play to them!

just had the windscreen replaced a week ago. so basically i have no chance of getting the locks to match the ignition locks. You can't have a lock "doctored" to match a key can you? All of mine match apart from the drivers' door. If I could make it fit then I might be able to live with it.

do you have the original door lock?
it *may* be possible to strip the barrel out of it, and fit it into another door lock, but ive never tried, so dont know how far you can strip the door locks!

locks
Hi
In the past i have doctored a boot lock to fit an existing key, usually when some scumbag has screwdrivered the lock and damaged the key hole.
Basically
1/ remove whole lock assembly
2/ punch out small pin or circlip that retains just the lock barrel.
3/ do the same to your 'new' lock
4/ For an existing working key, swop the tumblers (sliding brass plates) over from the damaged barrel to the new one
5/ refit everything.
If you don't have a key that fits, complete above to step 4.
Now insert your key in the barrel and you'll see the tumblers either lift up or drop. For the key to open the lock, all tumblers must lay flush with the barrel (they stick up/down to stop it rotating when wrong key or no key).
Swop tumblers around from your existing lock and your new one until you get it as good as possible, then with a bit of gentle filing (either the ends of tumblers or the slot in middle) get it so they lay flush.
Clean everything of swarf, lubricate with graphite (not oil/grease) and put back together. Test it before putting in car.
Alternatively take yout lock/barrel & key to a locksmith. He can either cut a key to fit the lock, or may be able to make lock fir the key if he has a supply of tumblers.
It sounds difficult, but once you get the barrel out, its quite obvious whats happening.

i have a replacement lock on the driver's door. so all locks are identical but this one.
Do you mean that Volvo can order me a new drivers lock to go with the other 4 on the car (doors, boot, glovebox, ign. etc)? That sounds good.
