Volvo 480 Club Europe

While I was trying to replace the drivers mirror, I accidentally dislodged the electric window cable, and now it won't fit back on its wheel. This isn't helped by the fact I can only go by touch as I can't see what I'm doing


On a positive I have confirmation my car is waxy oiled....

Any idea how I can rectify the situation?

I suspect you'll have to take the mechanism out - or at least part way out - of the door. If you're trying to spring the cable back over the wheel, you need to see what you're doing otherwise you risk breaking one of the fragile plastic parts of the mechanism...

Look on the bright side, every day is a school day

the window wire is areal bu88er to fit if it has lost it's way ....

The route of the wire around the spool is 'less than obvious', hopefully it is only jumped off the top or bottom guide pulley , try and move the window as little as possible (ok if under cover, not handy if pi55ing down)

I'm sure that Jeff has done a 'how to' remove (&refit) ?

I tried lowering the window all the way and up again, to try and get the idea slack to get it round the bottom pulley. You are right, every day is a school day but it's just really annoying, but the keyhole light decided to work again though...

I'd use lots of white spirit to thin it down to the point of not existing. Then I'd be replacing with some BiltHamber S50, applied warm.

That was the question wasn't it?

Sadly I've not done a window removal guide, but I do know the motor mount itself is rubber mounted, so If you're going to remove, do so with plenty of lube because the mounts will shear off. I may have a motor I can take a picture of if a visual guide helps?

Hi david that is really useful I think

The wire has come dislodged from the lower spool (closest to the motor)

I think when I was trying to put it on I didn't have it in the recessed track, no wonder It didn't go round

The car is getting resprayed on saturday so I don't know when I will be able to get this fixed, but I think there is a way

if you do take the steel cover off the drive area, get somebody standing by to take a photo, as it will instantly try and 'unwind', ask me how I know....
then you need to take another one apart to figure out the route, and do a mental mirroring excercise!

Is it possible to remove the motor from the frame and move it to get enough slack to get the wire back in place and then re-tension the motor?

from memory I think there was a spring within the motor/spool affair and so you 'should' be able to jemmy the wire over the pulley, there is the small notch and pull around using a piece of plastic from a milk bottle? like a very thin tyre lever. double the plastic around the wire to get a decent grip?

Ok so I have had a look at this today and it seems that it is impossible to do without taking the mechanism out. How should I go about removing the window motor? I am particularly worried about damaging the window

You wont damage the window unless you are particularly ham fisted just get it out the door with the few bolts it is held on with.

The glass should stay up with friction so don't worry about it dropping down while you work. If you have to drive with the mechanism removed then a wooden stick of appropriate length is good to hold the glass up so it doesn't slowly drop down and get noisy as you drive.

If you bugger it up or can't fix it, then a 2nd hand replacement is probably similarly priced to sending it to Joep in NL for repair (which with postage might be a bit pricey)
