How to replace door mirrors (pre facelift)

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

How to replace door mirrors (pre facelift)

Post by MisterH » Fri Oct 23, 2020 9:50 pm

'Evening all

I am going to try and replace my doormirrors soon. I have looked at the guides on here but the only ones I could find covered the facelift 'small' mirror. Would this guide apply for my '88 car or is there a different procedure for my car?

Many thanks
Ben

Replacing the WHOLE mirror assembly or just the coloured cap?

The WHOLE assembly, as both mirrors are knackered (but DO work fine)

Door card off
Triangle off
Massive posidrive screw holds it in place.
Un thread wiring loom from within door

Would add that "massive posidrive" is more likely to be a Philips No. 3 and not try try with the more usual No. 2 Philips, or even an actual posidrive which wont grip properly as it has four extra splines.

Its really not difficult though.

What do you mean by "knackered"? As Jeff says, the caps can be swapped over (once the glass is out), the motors can be swapped too (although that is more tricky with wiring).

The passenger side is crumbling and smashed, it still works, but is exposed and the unit is broken. The motor is fine, just the surround (got whacked by a branch on a country lane)

Ah yeah, that's knackered!
Have you been lucky enough to save the painted cap?

Hopefully someone can send you an entire unit.

I got the caps from the Lake's E-reg car for R1 and seem to remember that it still had intact mirrors... but I could be wrong. That is quite far away from you but if someone is making a trip they could help you out. It wont be me for a while though!

One of the first things I got was a set of replacement door mirrors however they are in Graphite Grey rather than Arctic Blue, but it won't be a massive job to recolour them at the bodyshop I'd reckon
