My 1992 480ES has a normal style heater panel and a Recirc button and a button with a (*) on it next to the gear stick. Is this usual.

BTW the car does have an A/C compressor before any jokes occur :hopping:

Though it probably needs regassing! as the air is not cold :( ,but it's cold enough in England anyway :D

It gets worse, when I push the button, for the a/c (*) the compressor doesn't engage. I have checked the fuse in the car and the fuse on the relay that one of the wires from the comp. leads too, but they look fine.

:help:

Mine was warm air until they filled her up! The recirc button uses 10% air from outside so the cold air inside is just made colder while using 10% (warmer) air from outside!

My '91 ES has aircon controls as you describe: it won;t blow cold although I hear the compressor. It may be user error as I have no idea how to operate it, but as the car sat for 6 months before I bought it I think it likely that it needs regassing. No idea how much that'll be thogh, so I suspect I'll leave it until summer!

Should just need regassing. I had the same problem with my new 480.

I can't even get the compressor to engage when I push the a/c button, so I don't know if it needs regassing until I get the unit to work.

:cryhard:

Oh well
It's winter now anyway.

There is a pressure switch in all AC-systems that stops the compressor from engaging if there isn't enough pressure in the system.
If the compressor doesn't start ( a click and it puts a little load on the engine and the fan also starts ) you most likely need to get the system filled up...

Does you're car have an automatic gearbox? --> If so, the *-button is meant to skip the first gear and start from the second. This is meant to avoid wheel-spin in slippery conditions.

is there any chance you have traction control ? I have learned the last "of the mohicans" have em sometimes, since yours is a '92, well, who knows.

Do you have ABS ?

Most likely its combined

Apparently it has ABS though it doesn't seem to work. I am confident that the button is for the A/C because when pressing it the blower fan (for heater/vents etc.) starts, thus it must be connected to the ventilation system. Also it there is no other button, to engage the compressor, and next to the (*) button there is a recirculate button

Shame would like traction control :D
Though I am using 195/55 Michelins which stick like glue :hopping:

Have heard that the A/C doesn't work below 10C so it could be fine after all!

Btw in deep dark Sussex it is currently about 6C
