How do I restuff a 480 headrest (or get a new one)?

'Evening all

The passenger front side headrest has started to crumble, it is at the stage now where there is nothing between one's head and the hard base, a big issue in the event of a crash.

how might I restuff the headrest so it either restores its old shape or improves it? I should be able to get hold of foams that may be needed, but in the event that it can't be done properly, where might I find a replacement?

is there a special foam that is needed? I know it currently has chip foam, and there is often a chip or two on one's shoulder after sitting in it. I was thinking about a different type of foam to make sure this isn't an issue in future, but what should I use?

the drivers and both rears seem to be alright

Many thanks

Second hand one would be the obvious answer. They don’t seem to wear like seats do

oh, is that an issue that comes up? the seats seem to be fine (apart from passenger chair broken)

Well typically the fabric/leather will go on the drivers bolster, then the foam is exposed and wears away.

Do you know where I could find one?

I guess you have the blue piped interior? This is quite rare as it only went with a few colours (yours and white maybe).

However, the headrests don't have the piping in so a car with red piping interior will also work for your car.

There's one at Lake's Volvo, Bedford which is quite knackered but the headrests should be fine. I think you've just been unlucky to have some damage to yours as I've never seen it.

Don't get too excited, the rear lights are split on the light emitting face and broken at the top!

Ok, I do have the blue piping

the headrest filling was sagging, leaving no cushioning at the point where your head hits the rest, so I tried to take the cover off to re position it, and alas, it all started to crumble away, and is now worse than it was before.

where do I contact lakes? I remember when I was chasing that red '87 car they supposedly had, they didn't do email really, so might have to phone them?

also, do you know what became of that red car?

This is the car they were talking about to you and I. I think they were very confused!

I would only deal with them in person or on the phone (01480212291). I suspect email is like Star Trek to them! They should be able to post it. If not maybe pay over the phone, ask them to keep it aside and I can bring it to the Lincolnshire meet?

Aye, wedge shaped jiffy bag should do it. Whole car, recorded post.
Hahaha

No, the headrest, I can pick up at some point if he can't get it or they won't post it!‎

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I can make the Lincolnshire meet, as I am going to France in October, but may be able to sort something out. I might give them a call at some point.

I am definitely very glad I went for my car as opposed to this one, even if it is a year younger!

Headrests from 440/460s are the same, given you find a donor with the same upholstery. The foam in those is this yellow more durable one, compared to the green stuff mine was made of.

Hi MisterH, Hi everyone,

My first post in any forum...
Have a look here: http://www.volvo-480.org/forum/viewtopi ... appui+tete
I tried the "easy" solution (basically, get a 24 x 80 x 3 cm piece of semi firm foam and cut out sides (1.5 cm thick) based on the cover and a "wrapping piece" of 36.5 cm x 24 cm, stuff empty spaces with leftovers or other stuffing material; I used wide adhesive tape to make everything stay in place) and it is clearly "good enough" - nicely firm, smooth enough. Not perfect (in the corners) but does the job nicely. Cost of materials around 7 EUR, and time needed around 1-2 hours depending on how thorough you want to be.
I also washed the headrest cover at 30° celsius, hand wash cycle, and all the goo went off.

Hi Niller, welcome to the forum, and forums in general, a pleasure to have you aboard.

As it turns out, James and Jaster were able to source me a pair of good headrests to fit, however your guide will surely be useful in future, thank you for sharing!

It is arguable that this is the nicest place on the Internet, so be sure to introduce us to your car, we are all happy to help with anything 480-related, and in some cases, other vehicles as well!

Welcome to the club

Just checked dc's archive of sales brochures - originally only Ocean Blue (UK name for petrol blue) got the blue piping, but then it changed to blue in blue silver or white cars and red in black red or grey ones. Talking of which we are still looking for a set of seats preferrably with blue piping for R1. Keep your eyes peeled please !
