Rear Wiper Spring

Hi all,

My rear wiper only makes contact with the rear screen for about half the length of the wiper, giving me a very small gap to look out of when the weather is bad.

It seems the spring, although it doesn't look it, is lacking strength. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, does anyone know the dimensions of the spring so I can order another. Also, is there a 'how to' on removing the whole wiper unit and getting to it?

I know I can take my own spring out and measure it up but I thought I would try the path of least resistance to begin with!

Cheers

The whole wiper arm assembly comes off if you remove the nut holding it onto the spindle...you have to lift the plastic cover; I think it's a 13mm.

It could be the spring, but equally it can depend on what blade you are using. The genuine originals are long-since NLA, and some blades fit under that plastic spoiler better than others. It needs to be able to move freely to wipe the screen adequately, so if it is tight in the spoiler or fouling against the plastic "ribs" inside it, you will get these sorts of problems.

Another issue can be that where the arm joins the end section that in turn bolts onto the spindle, it should be possible to easily lift it away from the window a little. That hinge-pin can gunge up and again, if the movements gets stiff, it won't sweep properly. A bit of oil and a woggle back and forth (with the arm removed from the window) can work wonders.

been there, but not a lot of travel to wiggle it :-)

Very true :) although the small amount of wiggle that should be present makes a considerable difference if it is missing

The rear wiper arm on the Celebration was pretty much locked solid and the sweep was just as the OP describes - removed wiper arm, cleaned and oiled up, re-acquired the movement and hey presto!

I'll give this a go - thanks!
