petrol cap lock/release

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

petrol cap lock/release

Post by annieosc » Wed May 22, 2019 12:41 pm

I have an Volvo 480 celebration. The black plunger mechanism which locks and unlocks the petrol cap by operating the handle alongside the driving seat is broken and I have a replacement to change.Does anyone know how to do this,I have taken the inner trim off in the boot and access is very limited.
I can find nothing in Haynes...........John

Unfortunately you will find Haynes of limited help with our cars - they really covered the 440/460 and just tacked the 480 in as an afterthought, without really appreciating how different it was to its 400 series cousins...

I am not entirely clear which element of the filler cap release you are changing, so I'll assume it is the whole thing. The cable can be traced through the RHS of the car, but to follow it fully you need to remove the cover and sill trim by the handle, then the side panel by the RHS rear seat, as well as the boot trim that side. It runs behind the inner metal-work as far as it can, and is clipped to the side as it turns back to the filler flap.

If that doesn't help, I'll try to find the correct diagrams in the service manuals and scan them in for you...

Hi David........Thanks for the information..The locking/opening system for the boot lid and petrol cap is all good. The problem is that the black spring loaded piece inside the petrol cap compartment is broken and wont engage with the lid.I have another complete piece but it has to be connected from inside the car and it difficult to reach.I will remove all the trim and have another go.If you could find a diagram it would be much appreciated.

Thanks....John (celebration no 40/480, V70 SE)

Thanks John

James has provided what I was going to dig out...like so many things on a 480 I suspect it is just a case of being somewhat fiddly/hard to access, but perseverance will see you through!
