Seats- are they all the same

Hi

So are the seats in all 480s the same , I understand they have a few different styles and the evolution of a head rest in the back .

But will a turbo set fit in an ES .

I've got an 89 es auto with leather seats and was going to replace them with some turbo ones with the cloth middle .

Will it be a straight swap . ?

Thanks

Yes, it will be a straight swap - my hubby has done several seat swaps, the half leather set he originally put in my ES got taken back out and put in a turbo - everything exactly the same.

There are at least two different seat bolt pitches for the front seats. If you are unlucky you might have to swap the bases over. I seem to remember that it was quite fiddly but perfectly possible.

Just measure the distance between the bolts between your two sets of seats to know how much work you will have to do.

And be prepared to battle with the seat bolts - Very Tight and Torx40 bolts with limited access (particularly the fronts!)

A nice way to to do front seats is to remove the backrest. Wind backrest fully aft, remove Terry & and hinge pin, disconnect upper heated seat electrics and elastic underneath. Then you can just play with the base.

Now is a good time to repair or test your heated seat elements. They often have a break on the temperature sensor in the bottom cushion. Check resistances with Ohmeter-- backrest is simple, look for a decent resistance and not open circuit; bottom cushion is similar but requires you to consider the Temperature Sensor which might open the circuit.

and before you do anything 'disarm' the ruddy great big spring on the mechanical seat belt tensioners!!!

next to the seat belt mount there is a small red arrow thing turn it across the car to lock them from 'firing', trust me you don't want to be near it when it goes off, brown trousers!!!

they can be reste, but it is as scary (or more) than changing front coils

The only one of our 480s that has them is the GT so maybe SW480 won't have that problem

hmm, mine have all been Torx 45's with a random T50  that made things interesting. But as you say Very tight and VERY limited access. ended up drilling out 4 of the 8 and replacing them.

To avoid rounding the heads try a few drops of Screw Grab or EZ Grip on the heads after you've cleaned them out before putting the Torx bit in‎.‎

This is life-changing magic‎ stuff by the way!
