Door lock trim and door turbo logo

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Door lock trim and door turbo logo

Post by mathrock » Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:04 pm

I just got a 1993 Volvo 480 Turbo imported into the US. Since it's finally in my possession I have time to fix up the little odds and ends that are broken.

1. I've noticed the circle plastic around the door locks are fading, cracking, and look horrible. What is this for and what are the ways people have dealt with fixing it?

2. Additionally I've noticed two types of door turbo logos and wanted to know the difference. Mine just says "TURBO", but I've seen others that say lambda turbo, like "λ TURBO". Did the different logos come on different years?

Hey mathrock,

Wow, a 480 in the US... people must think its a spaceship! Just like when I went crazy when I saw a 780 over here.

I'm gonna have a go answering a question rather than lurking!

1) That ring, according to my sales brochure, should illuminate. I would imagine its made out of a translucent material. Obviously they used the same plastic as the tail lights

You could paint it, but obviously you'd lose the translucent element.

2) Yes, the turbo door badge is date related. Just TURBO, like yours, is the late version. The λ symbol is the early version. Volvo made a big deal of catalytic convertors fitting them way before anyone else, hence 'showing off' with the lambda symbol from 1990 (?). By 1994, everyone was fitting cats, so no one cared. To be fair, only 1% of the general public knew the automotive reason for the lambda symbol anyways!

The parts catalogue may give a VIN break point for the badge. I think it was part of the 'facelift' that lost the bumper stripes, gave clear front indicators, and changed the front fog light glass.

Kind Regards,

Jay.

Sorry to correct you Jay but the white ring doesn't illuminate. The illumination to help find the key hole is just the aperture the key goes. This is missing on Mathrock's picture. The lock may still illuminate, the missing part is just to keep dirt out of the door lock.

I don't have a solution to the faded ring however and would be interested in hearing solutions also. ‎

I think you are right on the lambda sign. Obviously it wasn't there on the earlier non-cat cars, then they were very proud of cats so put the lambda on everything, then everything had a cat so they didn't bother.

I just 'coloured it in' with a black felt pen, seems to last for about a year, depends on which side, car sits same way in drive so N/S always fades faster, I guess I could just paint it
