Volvo 480 Club Europe

Any tips on removing the 4 bolts that hold on the rear bumper if they are horrifically rusted on? Have tried (in order of violence) wd40, socket wrench, tap with hammer, socket with breaker bar... there isnt room for an angle grinder, would a dremel be upto the job of ether cutting as bolt or making enough of a ridge that a chisel and hammer could be used? Any ideas?

You had a blow torch on them yet?

I usually go cherry red, then spray with WD40 as it's dulled off (just be careful, it is flammable!)

The heat expands it, the fluid can then really penetrate

yep, that's one way

I think I used 'brute force' as above, then LOTS of grease when re-attached it!!

Ive not set fire to them yet, in fact as I'm not actively a Gordan Ramsey fan I dont own a blow torch! This isn't my 480 which has already had it bumper 'repaired' but a tragic donor car, the owner would run out an extension lead for me so I have electrics if needed. Has anyone ever cut a bolt with a dremel type tool? Is it possible?

drill it

then split nut?

nothing to lose, assumes you can get to a flat?

Got an electric heat gun then? You know, the sort of thing used for paint stripping?

You could always buy one of these, but I think it *may* be a tad overkill....

They're unbelievably useful though!

worth a try, always been frightened of breaking 'stud extractors' in the bolt hole but in this case if these broke they'd just fall of so no damage done, except to the nuts, or possibly just shear off the stud

Have a set of irwin ones very similar.

As you've already mentioned though, the risk is that you fix one problem, only to give yourself another (nuts are off, but now you've got studs to replace!)

I'd seriously consider heat as the next move.

Have gone with some metric nut removers & a butane culinary flame thrower- I'll let you know how it works out! Thanks for all the tips
