sunroof possible leaks

torrential rain today and when slowing down/stopping got a shower of water that came from the join in the plastic trim above the drivers door, about 100mm from top edge of screen

does this seem like an area where the water would come from if drains were blocked? can't see why it would come in there as thought it would have sloshed over the edge of trim and landed on my lap :-)

It's never got wet before :? it was parked facing slightly uphill which should have helped?

is it safe to put an air line on the pipes or better to blow back towards the sunroof ??

the head lining seems dry all around, maybe have a look in the AM if not blowing a hooley . . . .

Maybe not airline - pressure a tad to high; compressed air in a can might be a better option?

I would try to pass a wire from top to end.

I can turn the airline pressure down to a mere 'puff' :D

Had a VERY quick look this AM (before hail sent me in) and it's maybe coming in at the back edge where the metal (or rather lack of) meets the rubber surround/seal :-( i'll try and get a photo and try and remember how to post them :-)

I've fixed it previously but maybe a hole developed between the rubber surround and the metal, I assume there is a tray in behind/below that had water in it, I think it must have then 'slopped' over the edge when braking
is there a place that has the parts list / diagram publicly available, (I have an old photocopy of some parts but not too clear)

The parts books can be downloaded on the main club website, under 'Downloads' http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/downloads.php
It's fully illustrated.

many thanks, i'll have a wee look, maybe water had leaked in and then run along the runner fr the sun blind, not sure how the sunroof is clamped into place, cant see how the frame (item 29) is held and the roof panels don't show a sunroof :-(

There is a video on youtube showing how to remove the sunroof & replace the struts - that might show you something useful. If not, removing the sunroof is a piece of cake.

Thanks for the image, that is much crisper than the version i could see on the Volvo parts list,

but still can't see why the water appeared at the edge of the roof (above drivers door) :(
the headlining all appeared dry and water didn't seem to be spilling over the 'visible' plastic tray (29) which is where I'd expected it to appear if the drain tubes were blocked! :?

A long time ago I had this problem on my 480S. I remember that something had got loose and the glass was no longer shut tight against the seal.

Somehow, even though the Internet was still slow and crap I found some diagrams and removed the sunroof, the fault was right in front of me and that could well be near the sliding block (P/N 4), for me it was on the passenger side so only my wife was getting wet :)

I hope this is the fix for you.

If it is item 4 thet is broken (common part to fail, although I thought you'd have noticed the roof not working up/down, not just a leak) then you can get a replacement here from Ruediger Scheidt who sells 3D printed bits for our cars via Shapeways

not too expensive, didn't know they built 480 in 1973 :-)

also lots of morris minor/1000s in reflection.

in fact parts seem too cheap?

PS not got wet since, (partly cos I've not driven it / left it out in the rain :-)
