I need a seat-belt clip thingy, mine is broken and this is a MOT failure, could you rummage in your lofts for me please?

I saw, £15 is too steep, made 2 offers already (I knew I would need one eventually, did not realise it would be now) but I will not be fleeced.

I should have one of those somewhere, could have stuck one in the envelope together with the tweeter. But what is exactly broken? The plastic tab is missing? The buckle works perfectly without it, just grind the excess plastic away and you're sorted.

The belt itself slides into 2 openings on the buckle clip thingy, the thin plastic one on the edge is broken and the other one is cracked, not sure how clear I am in describing a buckle but it is definitely broken. By a door maybe? Not sure.

Many 480's have the same problems here and pass MOT with flying colours. The buckle is still safe if the plastic tab is broken, it's only there to slide the buckle nicely along the belt. If the plastic has sharp edges, just file it off and there should be no problem. Bu

I don't have any good ones at the moment, or I must sacrify a good rear belt just to get the buckle off. Trouble is, I can get the buckles off front seat belts without destroying them (loosen the bolt holding the bracket below with a 5/8" spanner and you can slide the loop from the belt end off), but the rear belts have been sown together, so it's a rather destructive action for the rear belt to get the buckle off.

There should be other cars with compatible belt buckles but I haven't found/tested them yet.

Now, the clip thingy, does it have to be the exact same model or are they swappable for one from another model of Volvo or anything?

I'd reckon they're the same from a 440/460 and probably those from an 850 are compatible as well. Wouldn't know if earlier (200/700/900 series) and later (S70/V70) cars have the same buckles.

400 series are all the same or quite close. I have a 440 ones in my front ones.

But I'm quite sure that 700s are pretty much the same, would either say 900s are alike from my last visit to this huge scrapyard in Alicante

I think that when manufactured, the buckle would have been put on‎ the belt, then the little "dot" that stops it sliding too far down the belt when it is retracted is added.

I've never done the job, but I'd have thought you'd have to prise the "dot" off (destroying it in the process) in order to slide a new belt on.

I've replaced one or two of these and can advise making sure the pointy bit faces away ‎from your belly!

Lastly, does anyone know if the belt will slide over the loop at the bottom, or was that sown up after the buckle was put on the belt.

Lastly, FYI very early 480s have a slightly different design of buckle‎. So, look for post-88 Volvos in your scrap yards if you are hoping to get a match with most of your 480s.

With a bit of force, I always managed to get the buckle over the dot. But they're cheap and widely available. The most tedious job was getting the belt end through the buckle.

The end of the belt is sowed into a small loop, which will slide over the metal loop. The loop is held with a 5/8" bolt, once removed you can slide the belt off easily. If you move the seat you will have more space to see what I mean. I have bought a special spanner (16 mm will fit) to remove the bolt. Never thought I'd need British tool sizes on a Swedish-Dutch car

Don't forget to remember which sides were which, otherwise you might end up with a twisted belt.

I've always assumed that the 5/8" headed bolt is to prevent DIY changes of bolt??? (7/16" UNF usually) although I have a range of said bolts in garage from various cars

Seat buckle changed last week end. Turns out it was facing the wrong way, basically when the seat-belt was on it was pressing down on the thin plastic bit (the one at a 90 degree angle) thus slowly breaking it. Passenger side was the same so fixed it as well.

So that you know, the ones for sale new on Ebay for £3.09 are not working but they refund you without asking for a return.

Also fitted engine undertray (as part of my OCD) and a perfectly functioning tweeter (you know who you are).
