Car mats!

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Car mats!

Post by jifflemon » Tue Oct 17, 2017 5:40 pm

So, like many of us, I've been on the quest for car mats. And I'm soooooo close now, I thought I had to share the news. :hopping:

I've found a manufacturer of car mats, who can do anything (and I do mean anything!). They have the patterns for a 480, so today I wandered off with two sample piles to compare.

Image

Both are from their premium range of carpets; I'm sure they've got budget ones, but frankly, I'm not a used car sales man and I only want the best for my car! The upper sample can be embroidered, the lower one can't. And here's how they look against the carpet.

Image

The larger disc is the top sample in the picture above.

Now, I'm probably going to go with the lower one, as its that sort of material you could lose a pygmy in. That also means no embroidery; Frankly I don't need to know what car I'm driving by looking at the car mat
Edging will be their leather bound, and again, I'll probably stick with grey, rather than garish, thread!

Obviously, I know the question you all want to know, but it's actually the one question I didn't ask! I was just too excited! I'll be ordering tomorrow, hopefully be ready for the weekend! but just before I do, does anyone have images of the orginal mats? just in case I'm missing anything. And any idea if the orignal mats used clever fixings or simply relied on their shape to hold them in place?

Original mats had a very coarsley threaded plastic fastener which screwed to holes in the carpet. These went through slots in the mats, then the heads turned 90 degrees to lock them. They were also rubbish on the two cars I had them on.

Have a look for holes in your carpet as there are probably better securing fasteners available.

Should get a chance to photograph original mats for you tomorrow. My car doesn't have the holes in the carpet.

I'd be interested to know if they come out the same shape as the Volvo ones. My son had a set made for me and they are completely different - they were a present so no idea where from or how much. Thanks to dcwalker, we now have a complete set of Volvo mats for our GT, just need 3 more for the others.

If they are the right size and shape, they will be firmly held by the sides of the footwells as they are a perfect fit. Even the rear ones are a right and left with differing curves.

The original fasteners didn't quite look like this but they worked in the same way. The originals didn't have the wide base and they were able to work loose. If your carpet has the holes in (or put them in yourself) these would work to secure them, hopefully.

If they want my originals to make a pattern from, I'd happily send them.

Thanks James, they’ve got patterns, but may get them to do a cheapo set first so I can check the fit etc.

Seen those fixings before too, they never really work! May see about having some tags attached so they fasten to the seat runner bolts; the buggers will never move then!

So, car mats are in; As I mentioned, I went for the for thickest one and boy are they thick; Could lose a small tribe of pygmies in there!

Colour was slightly lighter than expected, but overall, I'm pleased!

Doh! Of course!

Fairly certain they'll post you sample stuff, but as they're local to me, if you need anything, it's simple enough for me to pop in.
