Centre Console Cubby Removal/Aux Gauge Installation

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Centre Console Cubby Removal/Aux Gauge Installation

Post by WRDendy » Sun Mar 20, 2016 2:46 pm

It's a while since I've done this so I thought I'd ask before I ruin something!

I want to replace the cubby below the radio with some aux gauges (which I already have from another car), but I can't get it out - the side clips are fine but it looks like it has two plastic tabs on the top, possibly the bottom as well, which are catching on the dash surround. The aux gauges do not have these tabs, and this is the first car I've had with the cubby rather than the gauges so this is new territory for me. Do you need to remove the whole dash to get the cubby out, or have I missed something?

Take the carpet off the side of the tunnel, plastic 'dome' down at foot well and then couple of velcro areas, it will let you get your hand up to free the tabs if you can't remove with brute force. . . . . .

Thanks for the suggestion - in the end I get around it by popping off the left hand side of the dash just far enough to give me access to the screws holding the VEM in place, which I removed, allowing me to drop the VEM just far enough to allow the cubby to slide out. Why it has those two giant plastic tabs on the top I do not know.

Anyway, the aux gauges are now in the car where they belong, rather than on a shelf in the garage. Now I just need the 2-wire oil sender to make them fully functional!

Is this the correct oil pressure sender? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380876333327
I know there is also some kind of adapter needed, because the thread sizes differ. I got the whole bunch second hand.

It could be - I also found this one:

As far as I am aware the engines on the 440 and the 480 are virtually identical so it might be the right fit. Also I'm more willing to take the gamble as it's quite a lot cheaper and in the UK!

How easily could you take a photo of yours and/or measure the thread?

Did anyone of you tried installing one of these senders? Do they fit?

Late reply - been otherwise occupied for the last few weeks!

The sender should fit, although you would still need the bracket to fit it to the engine. Haven't got a picture here but I could post one later if it would help.

I can see the whole gauge set with the sensor and the bracket in this eBay auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/192032858258 The price is a bit high...

Does anyone know if the bracket can be replaced by some non-original part? It seems to be a fairly simple part :)

Hi Jaster,

I'm guessing you got your oil sender fitted and working.

Did you use the ebay part you listed in the thread?

Have the same issue as just picked up some gauges.

Thanks.

I did, IIRC it was simply brute force that was required...

You'll need to get a sender that's compatible with Volvo part number 3344174, for example this part from FAE:

More importantly, you'll need a bracket to fit it to the engine, which I cover in this thread. They are pretty difficult to find - your best bet would probably be looking on a turbo or very early ES, as they had them fitted as standard.

Thanks.

I think I'll fabricate the bracket. Doesn't look too complicated.

The link to your previous thread gives the wiring info. so thanks again.
