Windscreen Replacement Options

Hello folks,

I'm getting closer to the point of taking the car for its MOT, ahead of re-commissioning her as my daily drive (12 miles there, 12 miles back). Looking at the windscreen, there are three separate distinct cracks in the passenger side top corner, each well over 10cm in length, but not running the entire length (or width) of the screen. I guess these are likely to get worse rather than better, and I'm not sure whether they will automatically fail the MOT.

So, am considering biting the bullet to get the screen replaced. Does anyone have any good ideas about what my options might be - basically anything that is going to be less than the entire car's value (circa £600 I think)...

Any ideas?

Martin

Hi,
Where are you located?
Last one I priced up was ~£160 all in and they came to me.

Thanks for the swift reply - good to know it is a not entirely impractical proposition. I'm on my 5th 480 now, and all but one have had some sort of issue with the windscreen, although the current car is the worst so far.

Am in Blackburn, Lancashire. I guess there might be a specialist with a screen somewhere in the North West, but I've not found anyone who doesn't just laugh when I say Volvo 480 windscreen yet :wall:

Cheers!

Martin

AFAIK

MoT only applies to an area centred on the steering wheel 300mm wide and nothing bigger than a one pond coin damage wise.

TBH it will be rust pushing the screen from behind
when the screen is removed tackle the WHOLE top edge with Mr Grinder and then rust proofer followed by lashings of paint.

I've had about three break, this last time the guys did it under insurance and left the car without a screen for a few days until I got it all cleaned up, filled, painted etc

look at your insurance excess (maybe only £30?) but also note that some companies will ONLY cover to a maximum of £250!!
