Drain tubes?

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Drain tubes?

Post by oldgitdave » Thu Jul 10, 2014 9:21 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the 2 tubes are in the corners of the boot behind the panels? There's one either side & look to be drain tubes open ended right next to the boot vents. Seems odd to have drain tubes into the boot  There are enough places the water can get in without this  I've just had Dusty back from the paint shop after getting the rear arches sorted & thought I'd get some waxoyl between the inner & outer skins, hopefully keep the old tin worm at bay for a bit :)
Tried to link in a pic from photo bucket but the forum won't let me yet being a newbie. I would like to share a few pics of Dusty so if any of you guys can give me some pointers I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi and welcome :)

If you like, you could email the pics to me and I'll host them on my photobucket. Or send the links, that would work ;)

No idea on the drainage tubes, maybe from the sunroof?

Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

the drain tubes are from the sunroof they run into the rear and then out through the bottom of the rear section. Crazy I know but there you you are another marvel of the 480.

Sorry, should be fixed now, try again.
I had tried the link and it worked, probably because the image was in my cache.

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your replies & making me feel welcome :D . Sunroof drain it is then, cheers glasgowjim, & cheers van for getting the photo available. Still can't really believe they'd design the drain like that  The water runs into the well behind the boot panels then runs forward and exits through a hole behind the rear wheel arch plastic cover. You'd have thought it simple to carry the tube through so water didn't just sit in the boot  anyway the good news is there's no sign of any rust in those areas whatsoever :hopping:

Thanks,
Dave

More importantly what is the electrical connector going through the corner of the boot floor. Mine has that grommet but nothing going through it. :?

Hmmm... Dunno, didn't think to trace it, my mind was on other things :) Rear fog light perhaps?

I'm also curious about that electric connector, it's not on my car. It looks aftermarket to me.

Hi Van,
I don't think it's after market given the history of this 480. The previous owner had her from a Volvo garage after being their demonstrator at just 4 months old, so owned her for over 19 years. I have all the service & repair receipts from day one, & I don't know of any non original items. I'll try to take a look over the weekend and let you know.
Cheers,
Dave

the electircal connector going through the boot floor is the connector to the abs sensor and yes it is an original fitted feature .

no abs no connector. :D

Great as usual Jim, saved me a job there :D. Was it standard on later cars or an optional extra?

there was 2 types of abs late and early with 1992 as a transition year. Some models such as the celebrations and turbos had them as standard as did the Es the basic s model did not have it fitted but as always with volvo you could get it as an option. My 1992 J reg (feb) 1.7 aka biffo has no abs . To me it just means that I drive a bit more carefully / cautiously  in some situations.

several seasoned members just added some additional tubing to the rear pipes from the sunroof and ducted the water away and down and out through the drain in spare wheel well. In the long term that is a very sensible solution as the 480 .

You know Jim, I might just do that in the very near future. It makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
