spraying and painting metallic - teach me

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

spraying and painting metallic - teach me

Post by Anadinolin » Fri Oct 04, 2013 9:20 am

Hi guys,

i have kind of touched on this subject in the VOC forums, as small rust bubbles are comming up from under the paint, the metal work feels solid still, the paint not so much. i have smeared grease on this to cease its progression.
Im teaching myself the painting process - at the same time trying to achieve a qulaity job for as little as possible.

firstly i want to know is a rattle can just as good as a spray up with a spray gun?

secondly what is the paint process with the spray gun? so far i figure you need several guns or a gun that takes several nozzles, im really not sure what size nozzles i need for each stage is there a definitive list of the bare essential equipment i need?

third, what is the best paint process? so far i figure its

rub down to bare metal in the area i want to correct/respray
mask off any areas that i dont want any paint
wet n dry with 3000 grit and wipe clean
then put on a wet coat - what is this? just water?
put on a primer (is it just one coat?)
put on the first coat of paint, giving a 50% overlap
leave to dry and correct any mistakes or runs
second layer of paint
then 2 layers of laquer

have i got my methodology right? also with metallic paint are there any things to look out for over spraying a solid colour?
my paint code is 327

im saving to get a devilbliss startingline kit or a gun with several different size nozzles - have you guys got any recommendations on sprayguns and metallic painting techniques? much appreciated

Andrew

This is an exclusive club you know, not sure your sort would be welcome!

Lol!!

Only joking Andrew, welcome along :)

Afraid I can't help with paint either. A few to speak to over the road would be Steve and his 244, John h and TC.

Hope this helps.

Oh, James... What ELSE have you bought now?!

You're ill man, plain and simple!!

like spraying pledge on to a mohogany effect writing desk.
seriously though, get all the pre preperation flatted down flawlessly, air movement carefully controlled, temperature differential of car and air perfect, equipment primed up and hope for the best because it will turn out anyhow as to a good match.
