Crusty wheel arches

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Crusty wheel arches

Post by BirkenNed » Sat Aug 24, 2013 6:34 pm

I`m sure this is a boring topic to most members; but please forgive me - I bought my 1st 480 this week. :hopping:
I have read that front repair panels for a 440 or 460 will do to repair rusty rear wheel arches on a 480; if
this is true, does anyone know where I can buy a pair in the UK ? I`ve tried flea bay and only found rears. :(
Any clues much appreciated. Bill

Did mine with mk3 vw golf panels (3dr)

They are not quite the same and take a bit of work but do look good, just a bit different. No problem if you are doing both sides!

Plus side is they are very easily available and very cheap too. Think I paid less than thirty quid for the pair.

Birkened could you post a picture? If they aren't too far gone they can be fixed with hard work and the very important rust conversion chemicals (phosphoric acid, etc).

Just realised that originated from August so I imagine you've lost interest now!

Hi, no I haven`t lost interest by any means. Not yet anyway
I`m using the 480 daily to work while my usual ride; a 740 is occupying the garage getting a brake overhaul.
When that`s done, the 480 is going on the axle stands to be sorted.
I`ve accquired a pair of rear arches that a kind man cut off a scrapper for me, which is going to put my welding
(skills ???) to the test for sure.
I`ll take a couple of photos and post them if you like; the off-side in particular, is quite bad and needs a lot of work.

They are somewhat pricey, compared to adapting VW Golf Mk3 panels.. (80 euro for inners and 149 euro for outer panels from Skandix versus around 30 Euro for the VW parts on ebay). Having said that, the vw panels do need a bit of work to make them fit, which is extra labour at cost. Then again, the Skandix panels won't fit themselves!!

I'm pleased to see that replacement panels are available in any form, as sooner or later we will all need them for our trust coupes :)

Ok, this inner and outer panel thing is confusing me- can someone give ma a basic 480 rear wheel arch anatomy lesson? If I bought the skanix panels how much of the rear of the car would I be replacing?

Skandix has the wheel arches, I bought them and they had delivered to x-mas. Quality is good. I bought both sides, in and outsides and the end cap. If you see the pictures at skandix you can replacing up to 6 or 8 cm.
If u need spares feel free to contact me. I ship to whole Europe incl. UK.
