Volvo 480 Club Europe

Hi there,

There are a few threads where 'rear light seals' are being discussed, my rear lights are glued in win some sort of black waxy glue. I'm guessing this is less than optimal! Does the seal work by pressing the light cluster back into the seal which is like a big rubber 'insole' making for a tighter and more waterproof fit? Any views?

It seemed to take a while to 'take'. i.e. I had to go back and tighten the screws holding the clusters in a little more as the butyl settled in and spread out. It seems watertight now however and I've had no water ingress for months now. I'd also remove your boot seal and check for rust on the lip of the boot whilst you're there. I found a little and applied rustproof paint to nip it in the bud.

I noticed someone selling proper gaskets on ebay a while back but I think it was just a one off.

I'm sure others will chip in with their suggestions.

Thanks Yorkshire- so you would have popped out your lights and then screws them back into place with the ebay tape forming a seal between the lights & the bodywork?

Yorkshire480, I used the same stuff on a leaking ford focus I used to have, on the rear lights, after a recommendation from Ford dealer...

For the 480 I just use a car cover or at least I did til it blew away doh

Hi used the butyl sealent on my rear lights very little fading after a few weeks one cracked put this down to the light age fifteenth year and the fact that the sealant stop the plastic expanding have some new rear light not fitted them yet but invested in some original style seals foam rubber purchase from V480TI

Yeah...pop out the clusters, clean all the old gasket crap off as best you can with a stanley blade and then recreate them the best you can with the butyl.
Screw the clusters back into position pretty tight and then go back in a day or two and tighten them up again. I'm fairly certain the butyl 'gives' and spreads out a little.

I'd recommend waiting for a warm day (haha - laughable I know at the moment!) as the butyl is softer but mostly because it's shit doing anything in the cold! Get a stool to sit on whilst doing it (my back was killing me by the end!) and take your time. You might also want to apply alcohol internally - to yourself - but that's up to you!

Maybe others have done it the other way round sticking the butyl to the bodywork and then repositioning the the lights over the top?

I used black Sikaflex myself, will probablly be a pain in the ass to get the lights off the car but hey, totally waterproof!

Member V480TI produced perfect seals, they save you fighting the bitumen while mounting and apparently keep the water out. PM him is my advise.

Yeah I just bought some off of Joep who reproduces selected parts.

They cost about 30€ posted and my car doesn't seem to leak with them on so that's good.

I have my set of Joep's seals one for each cluster, but nothing for the middle reflector, is this deliberate, so the water at the base of the bootlid makes its way down under it rather than over the top or siting on the lip at the base of the hatch? Ordo I need an extra bit of foam to seal that bit too?
