Hi, New here, recenty obtained my 480 and decided to install a better Radio. All went fine, but for some reason the ariel is playing up. It will not go down by itself, and will only partly raise by itself...the noise from it has gotten quite loud since.

Before I buy a new one, do any of you have any tips or hints for getting to the ariel mech, I will be looking in the Haynes, but thought I would seek advice from you guys first.

Many thanks in advance, PS any of you in Cambs area, a fair few Volvo 480s in this area!!??

SORRY - wrong forum!!

The aerial mast is shagged.

You don't need a new aerial but a new mast which will cost you about £15 from volvo, providing you haven't damaged the aerial motor.

You could contact Ben Harris who is in your area and probably help you do this for a small small fee or something like that.

Oh yeh, too many newbies!!!
:hopping:

Sorry to have caused any hassle..

mainly I am after how to get to the ariel, I am sure that there must be some "unknown" issues when it comes to removal, so was after any experiences that people may have had.

Great forum by the way, and thanks to Jamo too.

Get it from your local volvo dealer for about £15+vat and ask them to fit it, which they will do (cost me an extra fiver) - much easier, and if they break the motor, you get a new aerial for free...

What would be the fun in that

I wanna try meself, then afterwards you can say "I told you so"...I am also considering changing the ariel for a rubber one..is that a Cardinal Sin?

OK, good luck. Basically remove inner trim from boot, and the aerial is in there, in amongst a tonne of wiring etc. I seem to recall it being a single nut/bolt and one screw?

As for rubber aerials... up to you to be honest, just make sure you know which wires are the aerial anmd which control the motor so you just wire the aerial up and not blow everything up by using the motor connections

Thanks Dragon

If you do this, be prepared for some swearing, as you work out that half the rear trim has to come out to get to the aerial.

It's not bad when you've done it before but first time had the neighbours looking out the windows with me swearing.

you are right, but now the ariel is

Going up and down when it should, but only halfway, so I do not think it needs replaing, maybe bits resetting on the teeth??

All I wanted was to listen to Kravitz on CD :(...but is this not what makes the car fun...first problem i have had, touch wood!!

I have recently moved to a new house so am trying to give the neighbours a good impression, the car has gone someway to help this, di I say "car", I meant the 480!!

Cheers

Try greasing ! You can use silicon spray (after cleaning it) Mine did that too... Just move it up and down for a few times and keep spraying...it might work.
