modifying the throttle pedal

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

modifying the throttle pedal

Post by Pepijn » Thu Mar 18, 2004 4:54 am

This may sound like a strange question, but it is a very large factor in whether a 480 would make a suitable car for me.

I need to know whether in a 480 Automatic it would be possible to have the pedals modified in such a fashion that the throttle pedal can be switched from being the right pedal to being the left one (where a manual car would have it's clutch).
And whether it would be possible to exchange the pedal set from an automatic with that of a manual (by means of mounting holes and such), as exchanging pedals would be considerably cheaper than having a custom pedal mount made.

I'd really appreciate any info people could give me on this.

I think you would need to cut the pedals off and weld new lengths to them and just reroute them to the left. :D Just an idea

Pepijn,
It cant be very difficult, and it is certainly not impossible.
You might need to adapt the brake pedal, since the brake pedal in a 480 automatic is about 3 times wider then a 'normal' one.

You may find this diagram useful:

Image

It came from the Cruise Control Installation Manual, and the two pedals shown are the clutch and the brake from a manual car. However, it does show how the pedals are assembled, so might help you decide if it's possible to swap the accelerator and brake in a 480.

the acillerator hinges different, as a clutch pedal. from the ergonomics its not a pleasant pedal to throttle with, its meant to push all the way down or not, not half way like in a throttle pedal. its also a bit to high to handle it keeping the rear end of your foot on the ground, as normal. You also have to find a point on the pedal lever where there is enough travel for the bowden cable to go all the way.

anyways, the throtle is just a steel bowden cable, like in a bicicle or motercylce.

I assume ther is something "special", with your legs, because you ask it. but you can handle the throttle in many ways, even build a motorcycle handle in it to feed throttle. Any craftsman could help you. its just mechanicals.

keep in touch

succes
luck,

You could have the throttle pedal installed in another place if you can't use the normal throttle pedal. I have seen it like the way aircraft have them (Now that is cool) 8)

Thanks everyone.

Looking in the CC manual, there are no real differences described to the pedal mounts and with the general consensus that it should be possible, I'll assume the adaptation company can work it out.

It differs about 100 Euro if they have to make an all new mount and because of the RDW (the car's registration has to be changed for this) this kind of modification can only be done by certified companies.
So any parts that can be ported can save me some money.
