Popups problems

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Popups problems

Post by dragon » Mon Feb 23, 2004 11:31 am

Well I didn't get to drive the celebration to London - all packed up, engine running nicely, all ready to go, got to the end of the driveway and the missus has forgotten something, so I brake and she opens the door, and at about this time, the popups decided to just go down on their own, and no matter what I did, they won't come back up - checked the fuse, fuse 26 on mine, no, that's OK - I was already late leaving for London, so unfotunately the car had to go back into the garage, and I'll investigate at the weekend, so, pretty diasppointing all in all :badmood:

So, I suppose relays are the next thing to look at, but which one (I haven't looked at the schems yet), and if the relay is OK, what next? The motors? Seems strange that they were working fine, but something suddenly "went", and down they went... I suspect the relay above all, but as I say I didnt have time to look at it and it was dark... I might get some time in the evenings to fiddle, now it's lighter in the evenings, and I have no horse to ride this week...

Oh, the lights still work, dipped beam, full beam, flasher etc, the things are just hidden away...

The tall relay controls the pop-up motors, it might pay to also check the other fuses that affect the lights though as the to have some effect of the pop-ups operation.

No - the bonet will just stop them moving at all. If they were up when the bonnet "poped", they'll stay up.

Something else to check (once you've eliminated any other possible causes): My 480 used to refuse to put the lights up when it was cold and damp in the mornings. The bulbs would come on, but the pop-ups would't raise. After anywhere between 1, and 30-mins of driving, up they'd pop (if I'd left them turned on). In my case, this turned out to be a dodgy connection at the CEM. Once I'd "wiggled" the connector, the problem has never occured again since. This probably isn't the problem in your case, and more than likely, it is the relay - but if you run out ideas, then it's something to try as a last resort.

I didn't think the CEM controlled the lights movement. which part of the CEM was it? Could be where my problems are.

I didn't either, and looking at the electrical schematic again, the only connection between the pop-up circuit and the CEM, is where the bonet switch is. Basically, depending on the bonet, the switch is either providing a ground connection for the pop-up relays (when the bonet's closed), or it provides a ground connection to the CEM (when the boney's open), so that it knows to sound the alarm if the rest of the car is locked.

Looking at it now, it doesn't look like it's the CEM that was the cause of my problem. I did however wiggle all the other connections behind the glovebox area whilst I was at it, so if it wasn't the CEM, it must have been one of them that was dodgy.

too late now,i know but you could have wound them up by hand then pulled out the fuse to make them stay up (if they popped back down). probably quicker than re-packing all your stuff in the other car!

Yeah, I know ;)

But I didn't want to use the car until I had worked out whats wrong, in case something else blew at 70MPH on the M1...

I'm glad I didn't take her anyway, there's TONNES of salt around atm, and we had to drive past a gritter on the M1, so she'd have been splatted with rock salt...
