Question about long range lights (was: I'm sorry)
I'm sorry Mat, but for demonstration purposes I am using a photo of your car.
You know the lights in the middle, there are two either side. What are the ones closest to the middle?

So, i had the same problem too. Until just now. I have take out my CEM (at first try after installing it back in, it DIDNT work - WTF? panic, i was in very bad mood at that moment ) and noticed there were some corroded pins on conn D and B and C. And one wire's isolation is HALF MELTED! it is of right parking light, all the way to the bulb. Gues the one who installed side parking lights in turn indicators did a nasty job when he was using only knife and an isolating tape! All mess! will have to redo that with some more electrical aproach.
OK, back to long range lights. The switch by the heated seats switches is bad. It looses contact, this is one. Two, both lights had bad contact, for one i'm not sure but the second had internal problem, it was seen a sparkle in it if i knock it. So, my long range lights are now working.
This is how: (remember, i live in slovenia, it could be different in other country)
if no ignition is set, the long range lights work for half a minute if i flash a little and could cancel that by flashing again. This can be done in every light swich position.
If the ignition is on, I can't flash with main beam on. But they flash in any other case, i.e. lights switced off or parking lights on or dipped beam.
The switch by the heated seats sw is only for long range lights ON when main beam lights are on.
And I hear a click in CEM when the long range lights are switched on or off.
btw, i don't have a day running lights.
This helps?
Hope you have just a minor problem!

this flashing and the long ranges go on as car in rest has to be !
you will learn to love it walking over the drive yard and find the keys of your home: after two minutes they go out automatically.
I have never seen it again, but on my canadian uncle's cadilac !
that you cannot flash or put on high beam is the only fault : you have to run down the electrical schedule of the lights in this setting and check the items like relays, fusess, connectors.

volvofox, you misunderstood my post. All the lightning is working as it supposed to - at least i think so. I don't see any strange behaivour in my case. I can not flash with my long range lights if they are on all the time with main beam lights - this is normal, who will be happy if you blind him with main beam and flash him with long range in the same time?
and the lightning of a driveway when leaving a car is one of the best features on a 480! my previous volvo 345 did not have such thing. it is very handy! bdw, they glow for 30 sec, not for 2 min.
Strangegame, i won't leave my lights on, i get a beeping from CEM if i leave them on!
BDW, Slovenia just beat France in handball today, we are going for semifinals! Happy, happy, happy!

Kirsty ,
2 solutions =
Replace that stalk by a scrapped one ( mine was coming from a 440 not a 480 but it is the same ! )
After removing the faulty stalk , clean the contacts carefully with sandpaper. A friend of mine succeeded doing that without opening the stalk ! ! !
The very very usual reason of "high range lights" not working on flashing when popups are down is inside the stalk? commutator? The specific contacts for flashing tend to oxydise and the relay doesnot switch on !kirsty_2003 wrote:....Another thing, when you "flash" someone when you lights arent popped up, what lights flash?

To be clear , we talk only upon flashing while driving , not car in rest
Now you have to check if +12V is arriving at the stalk ( Brown/Grey) in O position and in parklights position . Normally no difference ! Same control at the exit of the stalk ( Blue/Grey )
If possible try to exchange for a test the rotary switch for lights ?
At least that means the stalk is doing properly its job of contacting to inform quite well the CEM !kirsty_2003 wrote:...Ive had a new stalk, didnt make any difference except that i can flash when i have my lights on sidelights. b4 it didnt...
