Self-parking mechanism on wipers

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Self-parking mechanism on wipers

Post by pt » Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:22 pm

Anyone got the lowdown on how the self-parking on the front wipers works?

When I got my 480 last summer it had been unused for 7 months or so. I thought that the lack of self-parking might be due to this and sure enough, after only a couple of outings in the rain the wipers worked perfectly.

Then yesterday, for no apparent reason, the same problem came back again. On any setting they just stop anywhere. Even on intermittent, which should be just one sweep, they'll just stop anywhere.

Haynes, as usual, has nothing on this topic.

For the fronts, just check that the axel hasn't worked loose from the bodywork (i.e. see if you can move the wipers by hand (gently) - you
shouldn't be able to, but if it's come lose you will be able to)

My sisters new one did exactly the same. This was very distracting!! when i came to look at it, if you sat in the car with the engine off, you could hear the relay in the CEM ticking off when you switched them off, instead of waiting. the intermittent ones even had a mind of their own, and would randomly stop anywhere even if you didn't switch them off, you caould hear the CEM relay tick then too. When i changed it, it was a second hand one already (had writing on it and £60!!)
I believe it is possible to dismantle this and fix teh relay, but seeing has how we have our own little 480 graveyard it was just easier to change teh CEM complete and it has been fine ever since.

Listen to hear if you can hear the relays, if so it is likely it is the same thing.
