Lock barrel replacements

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Lock barrel replacements

Post by dragonflyjewels » Sat Dec 18, 2010 10:42 am

Does anyone know if the lock set from a J reg 1.7 (non-turbo) will fit my L reg 2.0ES ??? Volvo cannot tell me without the registration numbers and the scrapyard that has the set has had it on the shelf for several years, so they don't know any further info.
If my hubby was here he could dismantle the barrel and try to figure out the problem, but he's in Saudi til February!! thanks Sylvia

Hi Sylvia

the lock barrels are interchangeable across all models , and ages of the 480 I even rebuild them to fit any key .

All the door locks , rear hatch and ignition barrels can be changed over but you will need a key for them.

So if the lock set you have comes with a key it is easy to change over.

As a matter of interest...

Each lock barrel has 6 tumblers/latches , 3 on each side and each one has a number engraved on it 1/2/3/4 it is just a matter of swopping latches to get the correct combination if you have to rebuild one.

Due the security aspects of this matter feel free to pm me if you wish to discuss this further. :D

If you are within travelling distance of Glasgow I could even swop them over for you . :D

The ignition lock barrel can not be altered to take another key but it is easy to change over the complete barrel.

all other locks can be set to different combinations.

The key is dumb so there is no programming of keys required.

The early types have ignition lock barrel that is shorter than on later models. Therefore the underside plastic cover is also different. I had to buy new lock for ignition and now the old cover won't fit properly :(

That might well be the case. Don't know if the newer type bezel even fits to the older column?
