Restoring faded red paint

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Restoring faded red paint

Post by Cerberus » Wed Oct 01, 2008 7:44 pm

evenin all....

I just watched an episode of wheeler dealers on the idiot box.

They took a very badly faded porker 924 and Ed China 'mopped'
it back to health.

My lil volvo is supposed to be red. Alas it is a faded milky pink.

So... Where do I get one of these mopping machines (can I just
whallop a mop head in my angle grinder?)

What 'compound' do I use?

Ed made it look so damn easy but I suppose thats the magic of
television!

Anyone done this?

help and advice please!

(google is coming up empty at the moment... grrrzz)

I mopped my white Celeb, and boy did it turn out good, took years off the car...

I got a proper silverline car polishing machine, an angle grinder will spin too fast.

And along with that I used Farecla G3 rubbing compound, and a soft sponge mop.

I got all my kit new in an Ebay store.

Iiiiiinteresting...

one of these Silverline 110w

or one like this Bigger Silverline

Did you get the G3 from the ebay too?

Can you tell me more about the process? Do I need to mask off
any trim? how much compound should one use? etc etc

Go on... write us a 'how to'.... you know you want to :o

Cheers!

Go for the second one, the proper big silver line.

The G3 and polishing sponges can be found on ebay too, or a good car paint supplier.

During the process the compound can get splattered all over the place, so do it outdoors if possible, you can, if you have time mask off, get a bucket of luke warm water wet the surface to be mopped, and wet the sponge too, then squeeze a splodge of G3 on the mop.

The trigger on the polisher can be squeezed gradually to gently increase the speed, and build up to a moderate speed, about half way on the dial did it for me.

Keep the bucket of water near by and keep your sponge and surface wet, once you have done a panel or two, get some warm soapy water and wash the panel and whatever splattered compound remains, when its dry its much harder to clean off.

Arm your self with 2 or 3 sponges epecially if its your first go, you can clip them easy enough on the edge of panels etc and lumps of sponge can fly off in all directions, but they are a very consumable and cheap item so arm yourself with a few.

A handy tip before you attack the front wings is remove the indicators.

Then stand back, light your pipe, and enjoy your new red 480.

Might be worth heading over to detailingworld and having a look on the forums, see if there's any tips there?

That programs great lol, did you see them live at the NEC MPH/Classic Car Show last year?!

I have several compounds I use from when I sprayed Joes car, working from G3 to basic T-Cut. Jawel Paints in Brum may be able to help you if you let them know, as thats where we got our compound from. Our mop isnt an angle grinder attachment tho its one from JP too
