Clusters reborn

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Clusters reborn

Post by kev » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:31 pm

I know this has been covered before but I am so chuffed at the results of my cluster refurb.

I was at one point going to throw em in the bin as bits broke off and one was cracked.

Funds are limited for such extravagance so out came the glue and lacquer.

I,m very pleased with the results so I think I may keep them. :D

Thanks must go to my mate Tony who is a dab hand with T- cut.

They look excellent. I wish I could remove mine to do the same. Might give it another go some time.

Yep, agreed Kev-top job! You could make some money out of that if you can get them looking that good ;)

Hey kev

Any chance you could list the type of sandpaper/primer/lacquer you used for these results?

It's a real great job but when I tried, the lacquer I had just wasn't up to much!

Cheers

Proper lacquer in a spray gun gets you the best results. Canned stuff (like cheap halfrauds stuff) just fades.

If you dont have access to a gun, try Jawel paints, they made up some proper good custom lacquer for us in a can.

I am re-doing mine with a gun when the garage is free!

Esta put the gun away ,it won't help.

I used a custom can of lacquer from a paint supplier.Only time will tell if it will last.

I prepared using 1200 wet & dry .Gave it a few coats and let it dry for a few weeks.

This was because I went on holiday.
Then T-cut was used untill it was smooooth .Simple.

I understand that my newly aquired Paynes manual will tell me how to remove the rear clusters to have a go at this, but is there anything not in there that I need to be careful of?

Make sure you have removed ALL the screws!

Its pretty simple, dont think I used the "Paynes" for this as I was removing broken ones so I went at it like a bull in a china shop. Just remove the boot trim around the c-post and brake light area, unclick the light bulb holder, unscrew two bolts that hold the brackety thing in, nd then all the nuts holding the cluster in. If its pretty much gorilla snot free, it will comeoff with just a small tug, if its covered in snot *good luck*!! Fitting back in is reversal, but yo have to slid the one edge behind the centre part (unless you remove that) but with careful manouvering it fits right back in.

Think thats pretty much it, sure someone will point out everything I miss lol-altho if anyone DOES correct me that gun will be coming straight back out (cos women are ALWAYS right remember?!!? ) ;)

Wow! Very nice job you did! :D

I've got a set new lights, but I'm to glad with them that I don't fit them on my ride when it's finished. Instead of that I'll do the same as you did. :)

What is T-cut? ;)

Hi and thanks.

T cut is just a cutting compound for restoring dull paintwork .

Those rearlicht-clusters really look like new ones!

Well done!
