Opening up a 480 door mirror

Everything that doesn't belong in the previous categories probably belongs here. Interiour (how are the seats mounted? how to remove the CEM?) and exteriour (how to replace the popup-lights shock absorbers or a door) are discussed here!

Opening up a 480 door mirror

Post by Richard Kenward » Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:37 pm

I've just bought a replacement door mirror for my GT and want to avoid having to open the door trim to fit it. My existing damaged door mirror works fine except that the plastic farings and the actual mirror need to be replaced, but I cannot at the moment see how to remove them from the replacement unit. I did replace the actual mirror many years ago but cannot remember the process!

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers

Taking the door trim off is the only and easiest way to remove the door mirror. You cannot realistically open a door mirror and re-assemble it later. They are designed in such a way it is impossible without causing damage to nasty little plastic notches that break off during the process.

Read all about it here (scroll down to 9th reply).

Many thanks for the warning and the link. I'm very glad that I asked before getting stuck in to trying to open it up!

I did open up a few door mirrors a year or two back, only broke one tab (on my initial practice one) so it is possible to fix more damage than you create

Many thanks for your posting. I'm inclined to just put on the replacement unit after having sprayed it to colour match as I suspect that all the plastic tabs will be very likely to snap given it's age.
