No I dont mean the little brown, wrinkly, short arse from another planet but more the Alloy Wheel fittment sort of ET or offset...
Which way round does it work? Is it.... the higher the number the further they hang out from the arch/hub (38 for example) or is it the lower the number (32) that sits them out further?
Anyone running aftermarket alloys? Whats the highest (or lowest) offset you can get away with to get them further out? I love my standard 14's but they just seem hiden away under the car considering the front wings are so flared.
Quick ET Question....

The first guess mate.
The bigger the ET number the bigger the hub hole.
The 480 fitment is ET 35-38.
Its the size of the lip that your centre hole on the alloy has to seat around.
So,its a lip and hole scenario.
Just like the best things in life!

Well, umm, dunno what catgroom over there explains... But here's some sort of explanation
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/offset/offset.htm
For example, My Cetus has an offset(ET) of about 35. If I fit allooys with offset of 40, they'll go 5mm further inside the wheel arch. And with offset of 30, they'll come 5mm out.

yeah, steve, your having a mad moment i think, and talking about cb (centre bore)
basically, if its bigger than the volvo cb, then you can get spigot rings to make the hole smaller.
et is also sometimes refered to as offset

Groomz you crazy son biaatch thats C/B or Centre Bore matey!
I'm thinking of going for a minimal drop of 20mm front and back with a nice set of 16's but want to get the offset correct. I want them sitting slightly further out than standard but I dont want them catching the arches.
32 is the lowest offset recommended for the 480 (38 the highest) but some wheel specialists (leigh tyres mentioned and linked to in other posts) say 5mm either side of recommened ET can normally be achived?!?!?!?!
So would going for an offset of 30 on a set of 16's be a bit ambittious with only a 20mm drop or do you guys think it would be ok? I know theres a lot of other vairables... wheel width and tyre hight but lets assume a 6.5width with a 205 profile.
