Richmod wheelspin

Post by Brasco » Wed Dec 21, 2005 9:27 pm

I'm going to try and limit the wheelspin I get from my Turbo now it's modified, I guess it's time to check my options for new tyres.

I've got the Taurus Rims so I can go up to 205 wide.
My dilemma is that the best tyres for reducing wheelspin wear out like soap in a nun's bath and are fooking expensive.

Can anyone recommend any performance tyres that don't have a price so high it makes your ears pop? I was thinking there might be some up and coming makes from the far east (err... China!) that have recently come on the market?

Any advice would be welcome, I think this could be a big investment...

it's not about being 205. That means weight being pushed down firm or some crap like that.

anyways

should have seen the wheel spin using a T2 with supermod and 4 blokes in the car.

10 feet 20 feet 30 feet, oh the wheels don't wheelspin anymore! ROFL

Or try using my T25 in the wet ROFL fun fun!

I would have thought that wider tyres = more surface contact = better grip... surely?

Go for an 205/40/17 and you won't get any wheelspin ... you won't launch at all ...

One oft use phrase comes into mind here...You get what you pay for.

Cheap tyres will be, well, cheap. No matter what anyone says; "oh I don't do many miles" or "I don't drive very fast" (thats a god one!)

I just spent £130 on two 195-50-15 Michelins. Its worth every penny since the tyres are all thats keeping you on the black stuff.

John... I'm with you here... I just need to get picky with the part-worn blokey.

Chris, you're dead right, but as I implied, China seems to be undercutting main brands on everything and from what I hear, I was wondering if you could get their equivalent of Michelins for say £100 instead of £130?

I would pay the extra £30 just to have the word "Michelin" on my tyres than "pekingducktyres" ;)

Seriously looking at Toyo Proxes T1-R's now, since they last well.

GT Champiro and Nexen are apparently good value for money.

TT's are driven by middle aged men going through a mid-life-crisis. Or.. career women that think they're just cool until they end up in a ditch.

Was reading up above about 205mm width tyres and contact area. There's a balance, usually determined by the manufacturer. A wider tyre will have a larger surface footprint but for each mm2 the weight will be less. A narrower tyre will have less surface footprint but more weight going down per mm2.

This could also have an impact on the standard-norm safety and invalidate car insurance.

The other thing to look at is the profile, as in full profile, 70s, 65s, 60, 55, 50 etc. When cornering a full profile tyre will lean more than a 50 profile tyre. Again it's a balance as a 50 profile tyre isn't necessarily better since you're losing play in the tyre which offsets the forces involved.

Citroen 2CVs always used to be totally brilliant in the snow with their narrow tyres, where as the Gary boys with their stupid wide 235/60s tyres on a Pergeot 205 couldn't get up hills. A narrow tyre puts down more weight.

It's a miconception that wider and lower profiled tyres are better. Yes they do look nice, but since you're all striving for performance and ultimate reliability do think carefully before you spend £400 on a new set of tyres. They're a rip off!!

An A1 immaculate restored standard 480 is respected far more than one that's been boy-racerfied. It's like when you see the car ads in the paper where the cars have had almost £10,000s spent on souping them up and they never sell.

Ohh, remoulds. Had a set on a Ford Fiesta when at university, they lasted until it died. The rubber was so hard (or it seemed) that they lasted for years. Mind that I wasn't going over 75ish though but had been getting through standard tyres for ages. Money forced remoulds out of necessity.
