So what about if it's the cv rubber only that needs replaced? Is that a bit easier?

To replace the CV joint rubber you need to remove the driveshaft, and then strip down the CV joint.

So no it's not any easier.

You can get split boot CV joint kits for some cars, but I am not sure if they are available for the 480. Not sure how well they work either, since you wrap them round the CV joint, then glue the edges together :S

i left my driveshafts in situ when i did both of mine and just removed the outer CV joint itself from the end of the driveshaft.
wasnt too bad a job and i was getting pretty good at it after i did the 2nd one!

I have to replace my CV boot for the MOT - I may just get the garage to do it if the price is right lol but I will probably attempt to remove the driveshaft off my spares car and swap it with my car. Only problem is I have been warned by Rich (pruen) that I will need a very good socket set to get the driveshaft off and mine aint that great so I iwll probably end up going the garage way meaning the chances of me making the lincoln meet even more remote

Damn car lol!

just buy a single 27mm socket from halfords, i think it was £4? then use a braker bar and a scaffold pole as an extension and your sorted!

i had to do both sides for my MOT and its not really that bad a job!

Use a blowtorch on the hubnut first, did the cv boot on the G/Fs tipo recently, broke 2 ratchets and a T-bar on the hubnut before I went out and bought a blowtorch, still had to use a 4 foot scaffold bar as an extension though

Once you're past that nut its easy

to change the bearing or replace the CV boot?

i was meaning its fairly straightforward to change the CV boots, bearings i believe are a bitch of a job!
take it in and get them to take it for a run and then let them advise you as i havent ever had a bearing go and i dunno what it sounds/acts like!
theyre pretty good guys, tell them the guy with the white and the grey 480's sent you and they might go easy on you!

if not tell them you know the guy with the 1976 brown saab 99, its my mates car and they are all shit scared of it cos its a nightmare to work on, its always good for a laugh to see their worried faces!!

:hopping: HAPPY DAYS!!! :hopping:

We have solved the priority problem ... two 'loose' wheel nuts ... DAN-GER-OUS!! turns out the previous owner had put the wrong size nuts on resulting in loosening wheels creating a knocking sound. scary, but true!!

there a lesson to be learned ...
