Rattling from PI 40mm rear lowering springs

Post by Ben Harris » Mon Jun 20, 2005 8:17 pm

Ever since I fitted my PI 40mm lowering springs to my original red 480, it introduced an irritating rattling sound at every single bump in the road. When I moved them over to my black 480, the rattle transfered too, and dissapeared from the red one.

After exaustive investigation, I can't for the life of me work out what's causing it, other than the assumption it must be the springs. The only thing that appears odd is that the top two (possibly three) coils of the springs (on both sides) are physically touching when the car is sitting at it's 'natural' ride height. Could this be the cause, and is there anything I can do about it?

Has anyone else with 40mm PI's found this, or better still, found a solution to the problem? It's starting to really irritate me!

I replaced them on my red one though, and the noise was still there, so I don't think it's that. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Ben-this is rich coming from me,but did you cut down the bump stops ???

I've just done well over 50k with my bump stops un-cut down (thx JT!).

It took me 10 mins with a kitchen knife last week, now the back end has some boing but still handles well.

The arb links still make the noise, but is quieter......

:D

Yeah - I've cut the bump stops down - only one "nobbly bit" which seems to be enough for me. I think I might try replacing the ARB links anyway though.

I would try cutting off two...once you've got yerself and petrol in it, it'll probably be close to touching.

Well bless this forum and MSN!!!!!

Ben and I are now to swap springs

I miss my go-kart and lower look and Ben misses his comfort and non-knockiness!

So this Sat at Chez Wackie its springfest!!!!

The neighbours are going to love us,which is absolutely no problem at all,we have absolutely equal disregard for them also.

Have I ever mentioned I regretted my move to Norfolk everybody?!!!! :? ;)

I actually think it might be the Pi springs themselves. Seems to be a lot of paint dented between the rings. Like the rings are chattering.
