Wheel technical terms...

Post by VanDerGraaf » Wed Feb 16, 2005 2:01 pm

Sorry everyone, just wondered if someone can explain exactly about wheel fitment info in general.
I.e, what is ET, pcd? And what does the J in wheel sizes refer to?
Tyres and stud number i'm ok with.

Could be useful for someone else too.... :D

PCD is pitch circle diameter, the diameter of the circle that the stud holes make, when taken right through the centre of each of the holes
j is the width of the alloy rim in inches and ET is the offset.

yes, there are still speed ratings and i think technicallythe police can give you a ticket or something if youve got a ferrari with tyres rated to 99 MPH on it, i could be wrong though!!

Take 195/50/15 for example. 195 is the tyres width, 50 is the depth of the tyre wall and 15 is the radius of the wheel in inches

It's all in dutch, but maybe this is of some help:

With some googling you're probably able to find an english version as well. If there is enoug hinterest we could add a translated version to the FAQ.

Not sure about the cops, but i think for insurance purposes you must have the correct speed rated tyres for your vehicle.
This only applies in the sense that Murf wrote, ie a Ferrari with low speed-rated tyres would not be considered properly equipped.
But if you choose to put V rated (high speed) tyres on a slug of a car it would be ok.

Anyone else know any more about this?

Thanks for the link Coyote!
