Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
185/60-14 4.4in 11.4in 22.7in 71.4in 887 0.0%
205/50-16 4.0in 12.0in 24.1in 75.6in 838 5.9%
speedo will be 6% out, you need to use 45 section tyres which will still be out by 2.3%, 40 section tyres will make you -1.2% out

205 section tyres should be fine for scrubbing on 2nd thoughts, vandegraaf is using them on 15" wheels with no rubbing problems at all

Deffo.

Everyone who says their wheels don't rub, look at the fuel vent pipe in the Drivers side rear wheel arch. might have to clean the dirt off, but it will have been rubbed, I had a 440 that rubbed there with standard wheels/suspension, (once i put alloys on it it rubbed through!) and every 480 i have seen has rubbed there a little, even if its just on the cable ties that hold it in place. Later ones have a modified pipe that is slimmer, but wider wheels will still probably touch it.

Another place to look, on the same side, is there is a little square shaped protrusion to the right of the vent pipe. they rub there too. Oh, and the seat belt mount rubs on mine a little bit, just enough to remove the surface of the underseal, but not to expose metal.

I have 195-50-15 tyres, and a -40mm drop and They rub in the above places, and ever so slighty on the passenger side outer arch, just enough to leave a dusty mark on the sidewall of the tyre in the summer.

Edds car we repositioned the vent pipe, and have ground the arches back to a very small lip (painted and undersealed) but his 205-45-16's c/w -40mm still rub.

Post by felyx » Mon Jan 17, 2005 7:26 pm

So if they rub with a 40mm drop ,i won't lower in that case and should help a bit maybe fingers crossed????

i'm up for the volviz bmw and merc spring theory same height though stiffer.

can you get stiffer springs without the drop????

4 four year old momo's for £110 i couldn't say no, and bought a volvo MOMO steering wheel and boss off ebay for £30 bargin!!!!!

Its worth the rubbing on mine for the drop i think.

personally i'd do the drop and put 15s rather than 16's on. Edds rub like buggery!
Still, can't go wrong for that money.

That helped a lot

If you go for a drop for 40mm /not 80-100 as I did/ and flex a bit maybe its posible to put 16' on with a small rubing

What about those who drive on 17' they are on standart height?

:D

205/40/17 These did rub but I did not hear it.

I even have the correct looking tyres so no more rim sticking out the side.

Thanks to MatBat for picking the correct style of tyre!

hmm, i think the arches are the same but there is a slight difference in axle length so the turbo's can have bigger wheels. maybe im wrong again and i just dreamed it!!

must be, because the turbo's tend to rub less. The owners maual doesn't specify any difference, just says 1.43 metres. We'll have a definitive answer as we will measure the turbo axle we have, and if its different it will be going on Edds car to see if it will stop the rubbing. failing that hes going to get 1mm machined of the inside face of the wheels.

They will rub. The best overall size to go for is 205/40/17. This will really stiffen your car though

Whats rubbing?
I've dropped mine 40 mm and put 225/50/17 at the back, and 215/50/17 in the front.
the only thing that makes contact is if I steer out completely the tyres make contact on the inner side of the front.
the only thing I changed is, I've drilled a hole in a tennisball, put a bolt throug it and put the bolt into the bumpstop at the back
so the tennisball is the extension of the bumpstop.
and no contact what so ever.
