Can springs be powder coated?

Post by jamescarruthers » Tue Feb 18, 2020 4:52 pm

Does anyone know if suspension coil springs can be powder coated or is this likely to crack and they need paint (maybe even special flexible paint).

I ask because my car looks stupid with the Monroe springs on the back and I would like to put the originals back on to restore the correct ride height. I kept the originals (I think) and they have a bit of surface corrosion so it's either paint or powder coat.‎

Hi JC

I visited my shot blaster / powder coater on Monday with all my worthless junk.... sorry, critical 480 parts.

He said he wouldn’t do the anti-roll bars for this very reason.

He knows his salt so I’ll take his word.

It’ll be down to me and Hammerite’s finest I guess.

Cheers JKM. I’ll just paint them in this case then. I had all my suspension stuff powder coated so will take a look at my anti roll bar and see if it is all flaky now!

IMHO some springs ARE powder coated, but cannot comment on how long it will last, depends on how much flex they get?

the ARB on the C30 & SS1 are/were powder coated, but flaky at the ends. To be fair the SS1 is getting old (1985) and seen plenty of the salt in NE (Scotland) so I just removed the remains (from the SS1) with the corner of a VERY rough file, then 40 or 60 grit belt sander, just to finish things off!

plenty of companies 'claim' that it is OK, but I guess 'limited' warranty?

I've had springs and antiroll bars powdercoated before and they're still holding up just fine, it won't last forever but no coating will!

Cheers Alan and Fraser. I'll have a think about my options then!
