What sort of tyres do you use? What would you reccomend?

Springs, shock absorbers, wheels. Questions about this can be asked in this category.

What sort of tyres do you use? What would you reccomend?

Post by rpruen » Wed Jul 07, 2004 6:52 pm

I have been an Avon fan for a while.

I now have 4 brand new Avon ZV3s (the replacement for ZV1s, that are no longer made). I find them to be good for grip, I haven't had a chance to drive for long enough to find out about wear. Though ZV1s did tent to wear quickly (10k - 12k miles for the front).

Anyone else have any thoughts? Are there any tyres that are better fitted to the 480?

Richard

Original equipment for 14" was Michelin MXT(or something like that), Pirelli P6 and Goodyear NCT-2 (?). Michelin Pilot would be nice if there was one in appropriate size. Maybe a Pirelli P6. How about Toyo?

The car had 2 Pirelli tyres on it when I got it, they where not as grippy as the Avons (I guess that's why they wear fast). They didn't wear out, they had holes in them :(

Thanks for the ideas

When I bougt my 480 it has Pirelli P5000 DRAGO on it. No major complains only that they get a littel noisier when getting older.
Later I got hold of wheels with tyres from kwik fit on it. the typhoon
Horribel tyres aspecially in the wet. I nearly destroyed my 480 al +east three times.
Last week had new Dunlop sport SP01 fitted. This becaus the sport 2000 is running out and was a bit more diffiocult to get in time so I opted for the newer SP01.

I have 4 Toyo Proxes (195/55 15) fitted to my '95 celeb, and have been impressed by them so far (done about 4,000 miles on them at the moment). They're good in both the dry & the wet and seem to showing hardly any signs of wear

Added bonus was that they where only £200 for the set of 4, including mobile fitting & balancing from e-tyres!

I have a set of Pirelli P5000's at the front and a set of Pirelli P6000's at the rear. The only problem is that they're about 100 Euro's per tyre inc balancing and fitting.

I have four Yokohama A534 195/50-15 ~90€ each.

When a tyre squeak it has lost its grip, my Yokohama never squeaks.....go figure

Hankook Ventus......rated as well as P6000's, Pilots etc but a hell of a lot cheaper.

Check my previous post for link to tyre review site.

I've got Pirelli P6000's both front and back on mine, and would highly reccomend them. Saying that though, other than the cheapy no-brand worn out tyres that were on it when I bought it, I've not had any others on this 480 to compare with.

Something I forgot to mention....

The Avon ZV3s improved the ride quality, particularly bumps and ironworks. They still feel bumpy, but not so harsh. The tyre pressures are the same, so I don't see why it should make the ride different?

Thanks

Richard

I had a drive in 'my' 480 today, it has MVX michelin tyres not MXT. BTW are Avon tyres sold on the continent?

Recently I have Barum Bravuris on the 480, these are Czech made tyres by Continental, I'm really satisfied with them, also because these four cost me 200 Euros including fitting. Bargain.

I bought the car with half worn Michelin somethings, those were terribile. I had Toyo Proxes and Falken ZE512, both are pretty good, but double the price of the Barum ones. Not THAT much better, the difference is not justified. Both kinds wore rapidly, did less than 20k miles before they ran out...

On my other car, a 850 T5 I have now Pirelli P Zero Neros, these stick like snails with marmelade but wear out very quickly, 10k miles and over. Never again. 800 Euros for 4 tyres, pfff...

If I had to choose new tyres now, I would definitely go for Toyo Proxes because of their excellent behaviour or Barum again for their very good value for money.

I am also sure that next time I would buy 205/50R15 instead of 195/50R15. I drove a 480 with those fatter 205 tyres, they gave much better ride. Also, 195/55R15 is a bit smoother and looks better (slightly bigger) on a 480.
I, personally, don't like 17" wheels on 480s, those are waaay out of proportion, I think.

Answering the question:
Yes, Avons are available on the continent. At least they are, in Hungary. Barely known, though, just introduced last year.
