Have been driven mad for the last few weeks with an insane loud tapping from the rear os wheel . Eventaully put a washer in and it quietened down a bit but just got as bad again.

So bit the bullet bought a cheap set of OE spec shocks from euro car parts fited them this morning in the rain and the noise has gone :D

Unbelieveable think one of the shocks was defective but as I had them on for months - such is life.

Such bliss to dribve around in almost silence no need for the radio to be deafening

I fitted the Bilsteins also, my knock comes from the nearside though. Luckily I also got the Sachs oe so I may fit them and send the blacks back...

...once it stops raining

Its dry where i am! ;) Thats handy info i was thinking of putting the bilstein shocks on my 480, might not bother! Do the Sachs ones come in gas format? And are they better in terms of performance?

Could this be... I've had a knocking sound on the car since I restored it. And I have bilsteins. I haven't found out if it is the shocks that make the sound. Well I prolly will found out when the Konis go in... :)

The offending shock when I took it off seemed to have about 4/8mm of travel before the damping efect could be felt , the other bilstein damped immediaely there was a discernible difference between the 2 shocks . Will never again fit bilsteins so tossed the 2 of them ino the bin with a smile on my face a song in my heart

If i remember rightly, this was a well discussed topic...

Basically, the holes at the top of the shocks that bolt to the body are slightly bigger than the bolts that go through them, so the shocks have a tiny amount of movement where the top bolt goes through, so instead of being tight, they jiggle a fraction... or something like that.

KYB do an 'Excellence' range. They are oil filled, but they are perfect. My Dad went through several shocks before settling on those.

i have fitted bilstiens to 3 cars over the years and really don't rate them, also europarts had 2 types of bilstiens but with the same part number i.e you end up without a matching pair , as they were made by different factories.

also if used forced down a new one and watched the rebound pressure and response time , they were quite far out ( like random in pairing )
