newbie question

Post by WYNS480 » Thu Aug 09, 2007 5:02 pm

hello all ,my question is what tyre size is best as my car has 195's on it but havng driven a car with 185's it felt much sharper and did not wander half as much both have had new shocks ect..

and is it worth the old rwd ploy of wider tyres to the driven wheels ie 195's up front and 185's on rears as i now have two sets of wheels..

sorry if this sounds dumb to any experts but for years i have played with rwd and the 480 is a car i always wanted but never had an excuse to buy mind you 15 years ago a volvo dealer talked me out of buying a new turbo saying they are too much trouble!!!!!!
ok if it lets me down one more time i will drag it to a field and shoot it.

Haha poor sales tactics but he was SO true!

I'm guessing you're on 15" rims? I think a lot of people use 195's all round without too many problems, some go up to 205 for the fronts.

And what do you mean by 'wandering'?

Tramlining, most noticeable in the left hand lane of the motorway - The wider the tyres, the more noticeable it becomes.

i get that a lot with the PT cruiser....to the point where i can let go of the wheel and the car just follows the white lines.....never had it in a 480 though, and had 205s on two of them....

thanks for the replies ...the car just seems to dance i have done the shocks, bushes, had the wheel angles etc checked my only thought is maybe the steering rack has a bit of play so maybe will have to sort and replace..
now another question any non power assisted 480's out there all my other cars have not had it and am wondering if a quick rack could be had for the car non power assisted..
ok if it lets me down one more time i will drag it to a field and shoot it.

There was a modded ES with a 440 non PS rack fitted and driving was tricky and parking a PITA.
