Complete suspension change

Post by default_user » Fri Dec 15, 2006 12:04 am

I've been looking at the prices for 480 suspension parts on Euro Car Parts web site. It seems that for a complete kit (4 springs, 2 struts, 2 shocks) I'm going to have to pay around £280. I've seen uprated and lowered suspension kits for less than this for most popular applications. However, finding a complete kit for the 480 is proving difficult. Can anyone recommend a source? Failing that, a cheaper source of standard components?

I'd also recommend replacing the top strut mounts on the front, while you're at it. They're likely to be worn, and it would be silly not to replace them whilst you've got the strut assembly in pieces.

Oh, and don't buy Bilstein shocks - at least don't buy them for the back, anyway. I fitted them to both my 480's, and eventually tracked the continual knocking noise I was getting back to them. Even though they were less than a year old, I replaced them with Boge/Sachs OEM shocks from www.partsforvolvos.co.uk and it cured it on both cars.

Thats cos they are shite...
The Pi springs I had sagged sooooo much. It was a revelation in handling when I went back to standard springs.
I need new rear dampers and am going to aim to get boge or sachs ones on, as thats what volvo use anyway.

Why do you need 4 new springs BTW?

New springs

Post by default_user » Fri Dec 15, 2006 10:12 pm

I just assume that I do...

As stated, the ride is very bouncy. If I can get away with just replacing the struts and shocks that would be great, 'cos I don't want to be spending loads right now. The car has done 124000 miles, presumably on the same springs. The ride height looks normal all round. How often would springs need to be replaced?

If your'e looking for good and affordable shocks, then you can also check my site. On the 480 sport section you'll find a selection of very usable information about shocks.
With the information supplied on the site you can go to any carpartsstore near you.
